Ok I don‘t know if this will get any traction, but I will make a start:

In general, lyrics don't mean that much to me because I rarely really think about them. For me, it's generally the melodies. So many songs helped me stay in a calm state of mind over the years. There's a certain atmosphere that a song can have that just kind of lulls me. Many of them were cheesy 80s love songs but I never listened to them as they were intended. I've rarely been in any relationships or felt that strongly about anyone so even if I did listen to the lyrics of a love song and relate to them, it would be in a vicarious sort of way (Which I often find comforting to just know that someone somewhere is happy and in love).

Ok but it still helps you hang in there.

This is my favorite. It reminded me not to kill myself and that it is not uncommon to fuck up many times before life finally becomes good.

The story is someone killed himself and played one of the singers other songs on loop at the site of suicide. Then his mom came up to Aaron and asked Aaron why her son killed himself. He wasn't happy about the incident and that inspired this song.

Maybe an odd choice but my Dad leant me his mp3 player when I was in hospital a few years ago. Among all the Hawkwind and Steve Hillage stuff (which was not really helping my mental state) was a collection of songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams, including this one.

Oh god, I love anything sad and depressing, when it comes to music. Give me Bruce Springsteen, give me Nick Cave, give me Johnny Cash and Billy Bragg. Give me all of Sia's back catalogue. I want to be bummed out. I want to revel in misery. Give angry rap music about holding down three crappy jobs and still not being able to make the rent. Give that socially concious gospel inspired reggae, the type that sings about not being able to find a job and still not having food in the house. And just keep praising JaJa. Seriously everyone should listen to Liquor Store Blues. One of the few songs with Bruno Mars, that I actually like.
