I don't know if anyone else has this problem with AIM on PC, but I recently have been receiving one of those non-stop, incessant, notifications saying that I need to update my aim. Well I click on the little update button and it doesn't update! It takes me to a folder with no files in it. SO, I got to the AIM website to update this ever so popular program. And I'm hit with a barrage of banners, now I'm entagled up in all kinds of marketing adds, when I should have been able to update at just a click of a button!

And another thing, I just realized I have been doing the same thing for 2 years on two completely different computers. W/sup with that? Any one else having these problems with AIM?

I have no idea what you mean about the 2 computers but depending how old your version of aim is it may not update properly. They do change these things as they go to newer versions. If you're only one version behind then yours seems to have an error somewhere. Going to the aim site to update is not difficult.

If you're getting tons of pop up ads espeically on more than one site you do not have proper security on your computer. I get no ads or popups on aim's site nor most anywhere else. You need to run a spyware scan on your computer for tracking cookies and other junk that you may have picked up on the internet. For a free standing program I like ad aware http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php but usually I run avast antivirus and comodo firewall which between them gets most spyware. You can also run a trend micro online scanner without downloading anything http://www.trendmicro.com/spyware-scan/. I've done that a few times.

After you clean up the computer you should be able to update aim and then I would suggest you increase your security so these problems don't start happening again. I mentioned a few 3rd party programs. The software provided by microsoft really isn't so great. I would at minimum use something other than internet explorer if you aren't already. Firefox is the most popular http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/. Make sure you have an antivirus and a firewall running. There are dozens of free antivirus. For free firewalls zone alarm and comodo are pretty much the top with comodo being slightly more complicated to use.
