Tonight my co-worker was dropping me off at home and my neighbors across the street were staring at me..... HARD. It wasn't just my own paranoia. The two guys were just staring at the car/us and not saying anything. I was so anxious, I didn't want to get out. I could feel their eyes burning a hole through the back of my neck as I walked to the door.

ARRG! I hate people.

I know what you mean. The neighbours across the street from me like to sit on their front steps, doing what I don't know - staring off into space? They drive me crazy. I'm sure the slightest bit of movement or sign of life draws their immediate attention, and I just don't function well when there are eyes on me like that.

I get random bouts of confidence with things like this. If I don't know the person, I will stare back with really wide eyes that makes it obvious I'm thinking "what the hell are you staring at me for?"

NExt time that happens, take a nice long moment to stop and stare at them, just so they acknowledge you're staring at them, you're aware they're staring, and you can do the same thing.

I do this to old people that stare at me in casinos. For some reason they love to eye me down with stern faces. All it takes is for me to stop and stare back and they break their stare.

Intimidation.. oh it's nice.

Or maybe you're just a cutie and they can't help it. :)

I smile at people sometimes when they stare, usually they reciprocate. People always stare when I'm with my boyfriend. I swear it's completely legal for us to be together..

Well, I can't get too upset at them because I have a habit of staring. But I don't just stare at one particular person, I just stare at everyone for en equally long time in a social setting. I don't know why I do that. I guess it's because I find people fascinating and frightening at the same time.

But I hate when people keep staring at you after you've acknowledged them. It's like they don't even care.

Just wave and smile, or do something insane that scares them... :D

I know exactly how you feel. Anywhere in public, be it a shopping mall, or in my car pulled up at the traffic lights... I simply can't act myself. I go stiff, and my walking motion goes awkward because i think about my actions so critically. In my car at traffic lights, I will face directly forward, paranoid at the thought of people looking, which they usually do. If there's a group of young teens, I'll change lanes just to pull up behind them, so i don't get the evil eyes.

Audrey, I'm totally fascinated by this. Are you noticing details about them (not judging them or anything), but maybe noticing little details like jewelry, body language, how they interact with others, clothes they wear, stuff like that? You know just taking in data so to speak? Have you taken the Brigss-Meyers personality test? Are you extroverted (I don't mean outgoing), I mean you find stimulation outside of yourself rather than inside your head? Do you enjoy people watching? Anybody else like people watching?

Ugh. I hate it when people stare! I just try to ignore it. I'd rather they just say "hello" and move on with their lives.

There's a special technique i use to combat this nasty little nipper because they have to be looking at something right?:

"which part of me are they looking at?"
"which part of that part are they looking at?"

Think about it.
