Hi,

I was on citalopram for ages but it didn't seem to work, although at first it did but I think I just wanted it to work so badly that I was fooling myself.

I was then given nortriptylene (one at night to assist sleep) in conjunction with the citalopram. Then a new doctor said it wasn't good to be on two types and made me pick one. I picked nortriptylene because with a decent nights sleep I felt a little better and the citalopram seemed pointless. I have been on this for quite a while and have had the dosage increased. I sleep pretty well but it doesn't seem to do anything for my anxiety or the associated depression. Well maybe a little but I am just barely coping with life and am plagued with suicidal thoughts I won't act on which just depresses me more and leads to more suicidal thoughts.

What works for social anxiety and depression for most people? I need help because I'm not living, I'm just alive if you know what I mean.

haha you have a lot to learn (as did I). It's ALL gray area, with nothing helping SA 100 %... not even close.

If I had to answer your thread title though, Nardil is really hardcore but it is (the most) effective for lots of people. But of course it comes with lots of side effects/restrictions.

Check out Tianeptine if you're interested in meds. http://www.tianeptine.com/

I agree with ''The Professor'' above.

So far , i haven't found a 100% cure. But medicine have also made me quite curious about my brain and how it works. This made me investigate my diet and lifestyle. They both affect the brain.

Now .. do you have any side disorder? Depression etc..? or is it just SA you are complaining from ?

I know loads of people will disagree with me on this one , but the only medicine that have ghanged my personality ''considerabley'' ( although it was effective for 3 days only !!! :|) was Buspar!

I took Fluxetine before and it was just a mood stabiliser. Nothing radical.. just more calming effect. Same effect i get from Citalopram... calming effect and emotion stabilising.

I took Buspar after a period of 3 years where i didn't take any medication whatsoever. After 1 hour i started to feel thefollowing

1- My brain chatter was gone...it was like i had a million whispers that went off

2- My fear was gone.. i could take on the world. Going outside the whole was no more a tense experience.

3- I was feeling more confident.. i could ask whomever whatever i wanted without much more thought . Hec i thought i could start conversation with any girl i liked anywhere.

4- Negative thoughts were shot down before they started to get to me. They didn't have a chance!!

5- I chatted much more... didn't care about what people thought. ALthough not in any insane or insensitive manner.

6- It was like my brain was no more invaded or overwhelmed by countless stimulai... just exactly what i needed and wanted to think about was there.

Side effects

Nausea

Diziness

I know the above seems just a dream... but this is ''really'' what happened to me ,, the crappy part is that it lasted for 3 days only !!!!! then it stopped having any effect.

Since then i have been trying to find what the hell Buspar did to me so i can re experience it. i have tried upping the dose with no effect. I went on it for a whole month with no effect.

Is it that it is a partial agonist of Serotonin that did this effect? But Citalopram increases serotonin as well without such profound effect!!

So my advice... try Buspar and see if it works for you.. because it worked for other people .. and if it worked for you the same it worked for me.. you can say goodbye to SA.

Being an maoi nardil also increases dopamine so you generally have inorgasmia if anything. You can lower chances of having that by slowly titrating up.

I had the anorgasmia on 60mg after being on it for a while and it was giving full effects. I dropped down to 45mg per day in morning all at omce. Seems to give better dopamine boost. Ive gone back up to 60mg tho for weeks at a time for a boost and never had inorgasmia again! Lowering dossge and then eventually going back up was effective for me to prevent inorgasmia.

I had post ssri sexual dysfunction that lasted years after stopping them so i was really worried about starting nardil.

I currently have no side effects at all. Best decision of my life to take the risk. I was scared out of my wits about sexual se on nardil and it took like 3 weeks of actually having the pills to actually start it due to fear of sexual se. Dont let a minor thing that can be over come turn u away fr this great medicine!

I wanna try nardil so bad but I don't know how to go about getting it prescribed and I'm really worried about the anorgasmia part. I got permanent anorgasmia from previous ssri usage. Before ssri's I was normal sexually now even years after it takes forever for me to "go"

Thanks everyone. I'm supposed to be due for a med review soon so I will ask about Nardil. Tianeptine sounds interesting too but it doesn't sound like it will be available in my country according to the literature.

If the worst that can happen on nardil is anorgasmia (had to google that, lol) it doesn't scare me... I don't do casual sex and I haven't had a girl friend in 2 years so I'm probably not having sex anytime soon, lol.

Well, it's not the "worst" that can happen. There is a diet restriction to prevent a hypertensive crisis. Although, I think the diet may be overly strict in some places. I've eaten stuff I wasn't supposed to, and I've been fine. I've even had some alcohol while on it.

What? No alcohol? Nardil is not for me then! While I'm not a big drinker I do drink regularly... I have been very honest with my Dr and the anxiety disorder team about my drinking habits and they say it is not a problem. I'm not prepared to give it up as many times when I socialise with my friends alcohol is involved although I rarely drink to the point where I am drunk.

Hmm...Almost every medicine says "do not drink with alcohol". It could be a risk, though.

I know you can drink beer and booze in general while on MAOI but you have to stay away from red wine

Yeah, I've even had small quantities of red wine on it. No problem. I just wouldn't try drinking an entire bottle or anything.
