Question about Benzos

Are benzos like SSRI's in that some work for some people and they have different effects on different people?

What are the differences between the different benzos like Ativan, Xanax, etc... Why do some people prefer Ativan while others prefer Xanax?

I think all benzos are about the same besides half life although ive only tried 2, my psychiatrist says the same thing. I have no ssri experience but i hear one can differ greatly from the other.
