Are benzos like SSRI's in that some work for some people and they have different effects on different people?

What are the differences between the different benzos like Ativan, Xanax, etc... Why do some people prefer Ativan while others prefer Xanax?

Thanks.

Yes to your first question although I would venture to say that the effects benzos have on people are not so varied as the responses people have to SSRI's.

You could find the molecular differences in those different benzos but you won't know how each of them will make you feel until you actually try them yourself. People have unique med preferences because of our unique brain chemistry. One size does not fit all, so to speak, or else their would only be one med on the market.

If your looking for a benzo to help your SAD you better still search. I am not happy with the Xanax I took. It made me feel flat and boring. Ok maybe there was no anxiety, but it shread my motivation. I certainlly didn't feel very pro social like I would from a can of Red Bull.

I'm becoming depressed thinking that there is no good treatment for SAD

I have tried 3 ssris'(with no benefit and bad side effects). The 2 most powerful benzos are Xanax and Klonopin, which help me greatly. Klonopin has a half life of around 33hrs for most people. And xanaxs' half life is around 11hrs. I feel that for me the benzos are nothing like ssris!!! Watch out, they(benzos) can add to your depression, I have heard. So maybe adding an anti-d that works for you would be of benefit....if you can find one. The only one that works for me Emsam(maoi patch). Good Luck!!!

It really is different for everyone. I take 0.5 mg of Ativan twice a day, and I feel this is a decent dosage as I become moderately sedated and calm with it. I tried 1 mg of Xanax (the supposed equivalent of 4 of my dinky 0.5 mg Ativan pills) and did not feel as calm as I do when I take my normal dosage of Ativan, even though most people feel Xanax is the more potent benzo.
