For those of you who have consulted a medical specialist concerning an emotional or mental problem (SA, depression, etc.), which one has helped you the most?

(I've just consulted my family doctor so far, but he was no help at all.)

Did you find the psychiatrist offhand? I've heard that they sometimes don't really listen.

My psychiatrist has been most helpful, only because he writes the prescriptions for my medication.

I think it's more about the doctor as a person rather than the profession. The best doctor is one who is willing to work with you to find what's the best treatment.

Several psychiatrists really helped me, along with some mental health couselors, GPs, support groups, and Al-Anon.

I would , however, Amelia, have to say the last psychiatrist I ever saw (whom has now passed away) was excellent!

I've been to all except a psychologist, and none have helped me AT ALL. I usually just feel 100 times worse after seeing a psychiatrist or therapist, and family doctors just give you a prescription without really asking many questions. I think a psychologist may be more helpful to me, but I have never been to one because there's only 1 in my area and he's way too expensive; apparently my insurance won't cover it, so I can't go.

I saw a psychologist when I was younger (about 13, I think). She helped me alot.

Then when I was 17, I went to psychiatrist who needed more mental help than I did. :eyes

I went to a psychologist for almost a month when I was 18, but I gave up and haven't seen anyone since.

My family dr is the best!! I'd say she's helped me the most cuz she's the only dr I trust really and is always working with me to find out the best way to get me all better :) My therapist chic rocks too! Dunno her official job title so I just call her therapist chic. Now that I actually show up for appts it's been quite helpful.. though I had to go through 3 other sucky ones to find someone good and who remembers me visit to visit :)

My psychologist helped a bit. I mistrust psychiatrists, which might be just prejudice on my part. In my opinion they just ask you questions as if it's an interview, and then automatically diagnose you and send out prescriptions. Family doctors do the same thing, only without the interview. :roll Haven't actually been to a therapist, and don't know much about them, so can't say much. Wanna be a psychologist, though.:)

Psychiatrist, since being diagnosed with SA, things have gone a LOT better. I have a way to go, but things are looking up for once!

My family doctor was the most help in dx'ing this and giving me meds... and she tried many time to get me to see someone (but my ex wouldn't allow it). But as far as actually addressing issues and working with me, it was my first counselor (but I only had her for 5 months). Now I'm seeing another counselor and she's trying very hard to understand and help... and has suggested I find a doctor that can put me on meds again. I moved since the other doctor so can't go back to her. Boy I wish I could. She was a gem!

Therapist, although not the private kind, it's the medi-cal/medi-care kind
