Propranolol has been a miracle drug for me. I use it on avg probably 2-3 times per week. However, there is always that spontaneous meeting or conversation I get pulled into that I can't prepare for. This leads me to want to try it on a more regular basis, possibly every day.

This leads me to wonder, if taken every day, will i build up a tolerance for the drug, and therefore cancel out its usefulness? Has anybody experienced this?

I don't think you need to take this drug on regular basis, you need to control your tolarnce by yourself, otherwise you will get addicted to these drugs which is not even good for the health.
Wait what they cause tollerence?, Addiction not just dependence?
Not good for health, what is these side effects?????

You feel som tollerence because you get used to your heart beating somewhat slow, So you might feel to increase the dose 10mg or so....(always check your resting pulse, lower then 50=no go)
Long term effect though are lowered Testesterone, Eryctyle dissfunction/loss of libido, Depression and Diabetes...

So no i wouldn't take it daily for longer periods!

Hey scoop123. I have been on propranolol for about 4 months for anxiety and migraines. I take one each morning and I haven't noticed any tolerance of dependence or anything. Beta blockers are a pretty mild medication. Also, I'm no doctor but if you're taking them on and off like that it could be unhealthy. It lowers you're blood pressure so the frequent changes in your blood pressure could be doing damage to your arteries and blood vessels. But like I said, I'm no doctor.

I know I had to take it for 2 weeks to get any sort of help with my anxiety. Of course it only helps physically and not mentally so it's not good enough for me. But if it works for you then that's great! :)
Good luck!

Thanks everybody for the feedback. Yes as I understand it, this drug was originally meant for regular use for blood pressure so that would imply a daily dose without tolerance build up.

My doctor prescribed it to me on an as needed basis for SA and stage fright. So if he thinks it's ok for sporadic use it's good with me.

I asked the question originally because I had a bad impromptu meeting at work the other day before I could pop a pill. I couldn't share a thought because the SA trapped me. If I could pop the pill everyday that may help.

160mg seems like an awfully high dosage. No wonder you feel ill and light headed. Your blood pressure is probably incredibly low. Was this at the recommendation of your doctor or did you just take it upon yourself to raise the dose to 160mg?

I developed a tolerance to Propranolol, I mean - I took it a few years back and initially it was a godsend at first. After a while it stopped bringing me the same 'calmness' that it used to - I guess it could've been that having some initial relief from the anxiety (and the relief that brought me) was no longer enough. I dunno - but taking it everyday made me super-unmotivated and I resumed my quest for something that worked.

Everyone's mileage is different so try it daily. Theoretically it's not a drug that you need to worry about tolerance with, albeit cessation after long-term use can cause (and I've mentioned this once or twice here) mild rebound hypertension. It's not anything to worry about, won't kill you and goes away in a week or so if you haven't tapered.

Try not to worry about whether the effectiveness of it will wane if you use it more - just use it when you need it (and if that's everyday so be it), keep notes on your mood once in a while and if it doesn't do the trick long-term try something else.

Off topic question - How do you like the Latuda?
works excellent for depression and mood swings. and mild-moderate for anxiety.

downside-makes you quite drowsy. you will be forced to take naps when you dont want to. it must be taken with 300 calories of food as well. which isnt so bad. also VERY expensive. your have to pry at your insurance to cover it, if they will at all. they made me try other meds first b4 they would cover it.

That's what I figured.

I may start trying it 3-4 days of my work week. That still leaves 3-4 days without it so there should be no tolerance build up. I definitely feel powerless without it. I guess it's good it's only 10mg.
