Every now and then someone starts a thread and a bit later they delete their text. From the replies you can often conclude what the message was about if you weren't there in time to read the original post. How do you find this behavior of people deleting their own posts?

Personally, I find it annoying. Often the topic seems interesting and I would have liked to have read the OP also.

It's kind of annoying. I would like to see what people wrote. I think people get embarassed about what they wrote and they don't have to feel this way. It is a free country and they can say whatever they want.

The topics deleted oftentimes look like really interesting topics too. It would be one thing if someone said something mean about another poster and then later deleted it, but a lot of the stuff deleted looks like it would have been interesting, thought provoking discussion.

If I make a post that I want to delete but I've left it up long enough that plenty of people will already have seen it, then I just leave it be. I go crazy with the editing though. It does annoy me a little bit when other people delete posts which I would like to have seen but I don't disapprove of it. I can understand why they would want to do that.

I think it's OK to delete in certain circumstances. You post a thread, your SA takes over and you go "****, I need to get rid of that"... perfectly understandable.

The only problem I have is when people go way overboard and replace ALL or most of their posts with "...". That, I find annoying. It's like people asking to delete their accounts. What's the point? It's not like anyone can track you down with your obscure username and lack of picture, location info, and contact info. All it does is break up threads they've posted in.

I know there are a few topics where it looks like I'm the topic starter because someone else deleted their posts :lol

I rarely delete posts. If I do delete, I only delete if no one has replied or quoted my message. It's kind of pointless anyway if someone has quoted you :D Same goes with editing. If someone has already replied, I don't change the part that they refered to.

As far as other people deleting their posts, I don't mind. They have their reasons

It depends on the reasoning. I don't like looking like I'm talking to myself, because I am, but I shouldn't look that way like I would.

I'm completely fine with it! Chalk it up to another symptom of SA.

As a moderator, it wreaks havoc with the continuity of threads.
We have had many a problem with people deleting their posts obsessively.

^ Heh, I'm not one of those (I hope.) I'm careful about not messing up a thread, or deleting a thread starter. :b Bad Phoebus...baaaaad!

It doesn't bother me. This is an SA site and I understand why someone would want to delete their posts. Heck, I've done it a few times before myself. That said, sometimes when I see that a post has been deleted, I'll feel as though I "missed out" since I never got to see it. But honestly, I don't think that anyone has any reason to feel self-conscious about their posts...well, unless you're myself, but that's another story lol.

Yes, I've deleted my posts. I've shared something quite personal that I shared in a moment of anger or neediness where I really needed someone's support. After a few people respond, I feel the need to erase. Maybe, I need to write some stuff in a journal. :)

I think it should be up to the person whether or not they wanna delete it... I sometimes too, wanna read what they had said, but oh well. I know sometimes I post stuff and wish I hadn't so I'm glad the option to edit/delete is there...I don't like how some forums don't have that option.
