I'm using these tapes as well. I'm halfway through and starting to notice some progress. Not a lot, mind you, but I'm progressively getting better. It's a slow process, but I'm hoping to be a changed person by the end of the year if not before.
I started these tapes about a year ago. I went through all of them but didn't do the behavioral part and basically dropped my daily practice. At the time I felt like they had helped me a little bit, but like many things in my life, I think I just got tired of doing it and quit.
Since then, I've come to terms with my social anxiety. I believe that some of what I considered social anxiety is just my introverted personality. I simply enjoy being alone more than hanging out with alot of people. I'm much more comfortable in my own skin now vs. then, rather than thinking that there's something wrong with me. If other people don't like my introversion, too bad for them.
I can socialize when I need to and I think the tapes helped me there. It sounds funny but I think my brain worked on the "problem" and it's better now. I know this is off topic but I haven't been around in awhile.
As far as the tapes go, I would follow Dr. Richards' advice and keep with it. I do think they have helped me and may pick them up again sometime.
I've heard many of Dr. Richard's tapes, though not all of them. I think that I was able to get my thinking more controlled more quickly because of what I did hear. I didn't like the relaxation technique because I had an overly giddy reaction to it and am not sure that really helps my social anxiety significantly. I do like his emphasis on many good things about dealing with anxiety and how to slowly get yourself dealing with people again. I think the tapes are good. I'm not sure they're perfect, but I wouldn't rule them out. They are a great resource on many levels. Who doesn't need great resources on many levels?
I really like Dr. Richards I listen to his tapes every time i get stressed out and they always help a lot. I think the biggest problem saers have is the motivation to spend a whole week on each tape like the Dr. says too. This guy went through this and has gotten better, I think the program is great and leaps and bounds better then Lucinda Bassett. I have only listened to about tape 9 so far and I havent spent the time I need on each tape but what he says has and does definitely help a lot. I plan to start the program over soon and do it right with lots of repetition.
Sabbath I Think Dr. Richards didnt completely work for you because like you said you were on and off. I think you have to stick with the program all the way through like he says for long term success which is hard to do, but i plan to do it.
i did 16 tapes out of 20 i never got to finish them coz i had to reformat the computer.. wish i could coz it tells you about social skills how to gain them after u dont ahev anxiety.
they helped a lot with anxiety tho.
