Hi I've read different books on social anxiety and stress etc... a lot have been semi helpful, but i felt that if i came on here i could get some input from people like me who really had their lives changed by a book.

A lot of books i have read merely describe the symptoms etc.. ok i get the point i understand that i feel these ways (ie heart beat increases, sweaty, twitchy, etc etc) but how do i get over it without just saying "just do it"

Thanks so much...

i am new here and really want to just get over this dibilitating disorder... i have felt helpless for too long.......

The book I found most helpful was Overcoming Social Anxiety and Shyness, by Gillian Butler.
I started to work through the book last June. It uses a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach, and you really have to also work through the exercises to get the benefit (as with all such therapy books). It helped me a lot on its own.
Then later I started going to a CBT therapist and we used the same book in the therapy. And I have made a lot of progress with my problem.
But the progress with the therapy has been incredible and I don't think I could have done it just with a book alone. You need feedback and someone to point things out to you.

Ok thanks, Yeah i'm about to start therapy again. I've done it before and i think it helped just cuz i was able to get a lot off my chest.
I've tried reading a book on breathing and a book called Beyond Shyness by Jonathan Berent (sp?). I duno how much they helped. I am kind of cynical and stuff about all this CBT stuff.... I don't know if I can change the way i think
