My mom has often asked if I thought medication would help. How would I know?
Sometimes I'm fine and sometimes I'm not. Sometimes depression and anxiety really effect me and sometimes I'm happy. Do you recommend medication for treating social anxiety and depression? I guess I would call my SA moderate, as most the time I can function with it, but when it rears it's head, it really does a number on my psyche. I have read that exercise can be just as effective. What about learning about myself by experiencing negative emotions and what about long term health risks of this medication?

Before starting medication, you can take a look at your diet. If you are deficient in either calcium (not probable), sodium (very unlikely), potassium (possibly) or magnesium (very likely), you can get some good results by correcting that.

Furthermore, you could take vitamin B supplements with extra vitamin B3 and B6 added.

If that doesn't work for you, try medication, but don't expect it to be all that you'd like it to be. Raised serotonine through an SSRI made me a apathetic zombie, without even noticing it. Other meds are being quite helpful.

Exercising more will obviously help a lot as well. Learning about yourself by experiencing negative emotions isn't something that I recommend. In whatever way you look at it, when you significantly change your diet or start taking medication; your personality WILL change - and what's the use of getting to know someone who won't be around for much longer? :)

I got really fat on medication but than their is the benefit and risk ratio. I rather be slim, anxious, psychotic, than happy, fat, and feeling like a zombie.

I found valium type meds taken as needed very helpful for my SA, allowed me to socialise and get my confidence back
experimenting with the dose is needed and it helps to carry a few tablets with you when out, disolve 1 under the tongue if the anxiety sneaks up on you

read up about panic attacks as some of us have these
