Someone I know had a web site created for him but it still has'nt been registered. The web designer keeps saying he'll do it,but is very lazy! Do you have any idea how to register a web site? If so we would'nt have to rely on this irresponsible guy. Thanks a lot!!

Do you mean the domain name itself? If so, yes because i've got several domains myself.

I guess I'm talking about the domain name- As is very obvious I'm sure-I'm a real dummy when it comes to computers.- The web site is done but he won't "register" it.- This guy did the site for free - but he's a known con artist,we would like to register on our own. - As he always puts off everything and the less contact with him the better. - Are the registering sites only for creating sites??

Hang on, what do you mean it's done? You can't start making a website without a domain name or hosting, unless you start it on a subdomain and then transfer.

So sorry about this - I drive myself crazy with my lack of understanding about computers-So-it must already be registered? Is that correct? He keeps telling us it is'nt ready to be used because it is'nt registered. When we check on GODADDY-it does'nt show up.Attempting to get a straight answer out of him is very difficult.

You can tell if it's available for other people to go to by typing the address into your web browser and going to the site. You'll either see the site (it's up), or you'll see an error message (it's not up).

From the beginning:

You can see if it's registered here - http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp

It needs to be hosted on a server before others can pull it up. Go to http://www.yahoo.com or http://www.google.com and type in "web hosting" - it'll come up with countless web hosts. (RESEARCH a web host before committing yourself to it.)

Have you ever heard of Geocities? That's an example of a web host.

Usually if you use a free host service, your address will look like this: http://www.webhost.com/yourwebsite

And if you pay a host service, your address will look like this: http://www.yourwebsite.com (you can use your dot.com name)

Some hosts will take care of registration for you. Some will not. (I think networksolutions.com, linked above, is one place you can directly register a domain name. Check with your host first though, as some can give you discounts depending on the service you sign up for.)
