It is ironic that worrying about performing badly in a social situation actually causes you to perform badly in a social situation. I don't think people really like people who make it obvious that they are very worried about what others think.

Yes. Yes it is.
I want to become more close to my "friends" but at the same time, hold them at arm's length.
I want to have a conversation but at the same time, I like silence as well.

Yep. If we completely disregarded all of our worries then we wouldn't be anxious at all. I mean the craziest people are often the happiest.
