Another thing that appears blatantly obvious is how SAD is under studied. I remember hearing that SAD is the 3rd largest problem Americans face (1. Depression 2. Alcoholism....)

According to the "experts" TRUE ADHD affects 7% of the population yet it get soooooo much coverage.

on the other hand SAD gets nothing....

Any advancements in SAD will more then likely place us "to old" to reap many of the rewards.

Drugs which precipitate the release of dopamine from
the brain cell storage units to the dopamine receptors on the next brain cell are pain
medication like OxyContin, Vicodin, cocaine, alcohol, marijuana, nicotine and
methamphetamine. Based on a NIDA study, intravenous nicotine .7 mg (lowest
nicotine cigarettes) was preferred by rhesus monkeys over intravenous heroin and
cocaine. Nicotine appears to be a stronger dopaminergic drug.
You'll note that all the drugs listed above from the article are also drugs of abuse. The DEA doesn't give a damn about your SA. They just care about making sure nobody has what could potentially be a party drug. Let legitimate patients suffer in agony seems the DEA's concept of compassion.

Take amineptine for example: Great antidepressant - a pretty selective dopamine reuptake inhibitor which worked very well for melancholic and unmotivated depressive people. But because it has some abuse potential it got withdrawn from the market. :(

This kind of amazes me. My psychologist is continually reminding me that social anxiety is one of the most common mental disorders. According to WebMD approximately 19.2 million Americans (yes just Americans!) suffer from SAD. Despite the fact that millions have it the disorder rarely seems to be publicized. You always hear my depression and cancer and smoking weed, but never SAD.

The odd thing is that SAD often leads to depression so you'd think they'd acknowledge it more.

I think SAD is so under-recognised because it impairs social abilities (duh) and makes sufferers less likely/able to kick up a fuss about their condition, as opposed to hyperactive ADHD kids and their long-suffering parents. The result: a whole group of people in exile from society.

Re: dopamine,

I think there is a fair point to be made about abuse potential. Dopamine is such an incredibly moreish and compulsive chemical that it can tear the best of lives to shreds. Under supervision of a knowledgeable and experienced doc though, dopaminergics (desoxypipradrol, amineptine, etc.) and opioidergics (Suboxone, etc.) do have a place in treating resistant mood disorders.

I mean, in sufficient dose, everyone responds to the brain's happy chemicals unless they have brain damage/abnormalities or aren't human... Unless you've tried heroin + cocaine together (in sufficient dose) or something similar, you can't declare yourself incurable.

SAD is not taken seriously because it is commonly believed to be just shyness upgraded to a disorder by drug companies in an effort to sell more drugs.
Maybe, but I truly believe that shyness and/or SAD have the same Biological connection within a persons brain chemistry. Whether they are two separate conditions or the same. CBT or just "trying" to be more social only solves the behavioral aspect, not the biology behind it.

I do know of people who are shy with social skills. I am one of them. However, I lack the drive to seek it out and socializing and just soo damn draining.

Cheers!

trust me you dont want oxycontin. pain pills for depression is like suicide. Just giving up and skipping pain. Sure they might work for a small amount of people, but Id think most cases can be helped by meds.
They even have brain scans of the brain on pain pills and the brain is hardly working at all.
Sometimes I think the brain is just hurt like your leg or soemthing. And meds are just ibeprofen for the brain.

I'd prefer to try out drugs for myself and come to my own conclusions rather than trust the medical community or FDA or DEA as to what I should use. I hold this view that I own my body and as owner should be able to put anything I want in it.

pain pills for depression is like suicide.
And this really matters when depression already leads to suicides, the 11th leading cause of death in this nation?

I personally don't know if any opioids would be effective for me, but I have the right to try them if I wish -- a natural right that is ignored by the DEA.

(Ab)using full mu opioid agonists (Oxycontin...) as a "treatment" for depression is a dead end because of tolerance/homeostasis; stuff like (low dose) Buprenorphine... different story.
