All they are saying is restart the machine. There is an option to restart when you choose to shut down.

What did you update ?

Have you tried sfc /scannow ?

Go to start menu, type cmd, then right click cmd.exe and do run as administrator.

Then in the command prompt window type sfc /scannow and press enter

Not likely to fix it but worth a try anyway.

When they said reboot they may have meant reinstall. In which case you need either an operating system installation CD or the system restore CDs that likely came with your computer. You'd need to back up all your documents, music, downloads etc to somewhere first... an external hard drive, DVDs, a second hard drive, or something like that.

If you do that everything will be wiped though. All files, installed programs, settings, etc.

I'm going to try that, Meee. Thanks.

How do you do this? My laptop didn't come with CDs when I bought it, so might have to do this.

I have an external hard drive where I can put all my things at.
You should probably call your manufacturer but when I did it I just turned on the computer and kept hitting the f11 button as soon as the computer came on then you just follow the prompts to do a system restore. This was for an hp lapatop though. I don't know if that will work for yours. I'm pretty sure it was F11 but again you should probably call your manufacturer. They walked me through it the 1st time and then I was able to do it thereafter.

Reboot or reinstall? Reboot just means you shut down and restart. If you're having trouble shutting down your pc, you can do a hard shutdown by holding the on button down until it turns off.

Reinstall is a whole 'nother thing. That means you basically start over from scratch. All your data and programs you installed will be lost unless you back up somewhere else. You need your installation CDs to do this. If your pc didn't come with any, then there is usually a way to create the CDs from your computer.

Restore is different from either. Your computer sets restore points at various dates and you can return your computer to one of the restore points in the past. You don't need cds to do this. It's useful if you think your problem was caused either by a bad program installation or if you somehow messed up some settings.

Is it a Dell, HP, or something else?

I know the HP laptops i've dealt with have the recovery data on the hard disk (unless it's been wiped). And some others (like Advent & some Dells) have an application to burn a recovery DVD.

If you have a sticker on the machine with the license key you could get a copy of Windows from elsewhere and just use that key to activate it. What version of Windows is it?

I have had problems with Windows updates in the past. Usually they just cause some other problems. I don't even update on my computer at home. I have dialup access so that would be the only thing I would get done. I don't use IE anyways. I just use Firefox.
