"What Van Gogh desired was to make this all too familiar world familiar in a new sense - in an everlasting sense, so to speak. He wanted to show that it was not clothed in evil and ugliness, that it was never dull or boring, that we have only to look at it with loving eyes to recognise its splendour and magnificence. And when he had accomplished this, when he had given us a new earth, he found he was no longer able to cope with the world." (Henry Miller - Plexus, pg. 62)

I don't know very much about the subject. But tell me how exactly did he give us that new world? Through his paintings? What is meant by that statement in general?

he had a unique vision. he struggled to make that vision a reality through the limiting medium of paint and a single, two dimensional picture plane. he succeeded.

however, I think he realized that when his vision was fully realized, it was not enough. it did not save him.
