heh i watched that one aristole and what come across to me is that these woman were so superficial that they only wanted men for thier money - some actually thought that they could be supportive and thus help a man in his quest for riches. I guess it's as equally superficial (and what came across on the program) as these men who are wealthy are only looking for trophy wives. They don't really believe in love and marriage nor care about it - marriage is a convenience -- and the women they want are just displays.

Ah but niether of them have ANY Class! I can't stand watching those shows - and they are all about paternity suits anyway. Now the black guy - what was his name - he had class. Anyway I find those shows similar to soap opera's - just want to gag when i see the previews.

I think its instilled in women to find a rich man to marry - probably why I never married - I always dated the bums :lol But seriously there is pressure on women to do this and I think it was good for him to show the whole story both sides. But thats just my opinion :troll

I didn't watch the whole show and perhaps Phil had a worthwhile message and Ci you would have a better opinion than I and I am guilty of pre-judging.
I think the black guy you are refering to is Montel whom I watch ocassionally and usually has worthwhile topics. Maury use to be worthwhile to watch and looks like he bent down to network pressures and I am disapointed with him as he was a good interviewer.

i watched a special on ESPN a while back about Shirley Povich, who was a sportswriter for the Washington Post and was Maury's father. After seeing what a distinguished career he had, I wondered to myself how he would feel if he were still living to see the turn his son's talk show and journalism career have taken.

I have only seen the shows mentioned here a time or two each. I'm not a fan of any type of talk show as a rule. I think I saw a very brief portion of Dr. Phil at my son's house a year or so ago, but he didn't impress me with what I saw - so I've never watched a full show.

But it would be very, very good for someone legitimate to do a show with honesty, integrity and compassion regarding those of us with SA... but that type of show... I don't think I'll hold my breath.

A show I did see a month or so back was Lars Larson show. He's here in Oregon. Both my sons and my father enjoy watching him and I just happened to turn on the TV one day when it was on that channel. But what I heard angered me so badly it took days for me to cool down. He has callers that call his studio and they have an on-the-air TV discussion. This time, he was bad mouthing people with SA that apply for disability. I was seething! Perhaps if there hadn't been the disgust and sarcasm in his voice and his exaggerating the words when he said, "So they're a little uncomfortable" it wouldn't have bothered me so badly... but that just set me off!!! :mum :wife I was going to write him but decided that I needed to cool down before doing it... and by that time, I'd lost my nerve. The unimformed jerks that don't know anything at all about this disorder telling others that don't know the difference, but admire his opinions, this type of garbage is almost too much! (As you can see... I still get very angry thinking about it!) :twak

CJ, perhaps it's instilled in some women from the time they're old enough to listen and learn to go after a rich husband... but it's not that way with all women. When I married my husband, he didn't have 2 nickles to rub together... and I actually had more than he did, although not much more. And I was never advised one way or another about it while growing up. Shoot... I didn't even pay attention to the type of car a guy had. I was clueless about those things. But maybe that's not the way most women are now. I can't say my niece didn't take that into consideration. But honestly, there are women out there that love matters above all else.

Definitelymaybe, that was an excellent email! Did you ever get a response?

I didn't know that Maury Povich died and The "maury" which I never watched because it's so discuishing was never watched to actually see the host of the show.
Peekaboo, that jerk on the talk show is truly a diservice to community. He reminds me of other jerks who are so full of themslves they can't see the end of their noses.
It might be better to write to complain to the radio station that he is aired on. Also the advertisers of his program ought to notified of his promotion of prejudices on mental health issues. I wonder if there are mental health or anxiety associations that could have influences against guys like Lars Larson?
In fact I will research this.

I just logged onto http://www.nmha.org which is website for the national mental health association. Under the advocacy heading there is a link for "stigma alert" where you can email to nmha your complaint or you can call 1-800-969-nmha. Apparently they get many complaints about stigmas perpetuated by the medias and they appear to be doing something about it.

I didn't quite understand this one. I can't tell if you misread my post about Maury's father or meant something else. Maury is still living but he made a joke out of his journalism career. I think someone mentioned in a previous post what a great interviewer he is. We'll never be able to see him use that ability anymore because he's too busy reading paternity test results :roll

Thank you, Aristole, for the suggestions. They were excellent suggestions. I had no idea the NMHA had anything like that they were doing. That's wonderful! I appreciate you researching the information. I think I'll send them a email and see what happens.

Thanks again!!!

You mean he became a full time playboy? Is he still married to the attractive lady who used to co- anchor with Dan Rather. Something like Chonni Chung?
I don't know about his personal life. He's doing a good job of keeping his private while he make millions publicizing the private lives of regular people. As far as I know he is still married to Connie Chung. I know they have adopted children because she can't have any, but I don't know how many.

The reference I made to paternity test results is because out of the 5 days a week that the Maury show comes on, 3 or 4 of them are about women trying to find out who the father of their babies are.

So aristole whats happening there? Did you ever get a response? Did anyone?

Dr. Phil today - people who hoard to take care of a psychological need. Going to have to tell my younger sister about that show - her husband is unreal.

My mother and I half kid and are half serious when it comes to this. My mother has a book collection that rivals most libraries, and a magazing collection that rivals most newsstands.

I myself hoard papers that I got from school and articles I clipped from magazines and printed from the internet "just in case" I might have some good use for them later.

Ironically, the one book my mother has that neither of us has read has to do with clearing up the clutter. Go figure.

yes i was able to watch it today

The phobias he presented - agoraphobia, fear of paper, fear of birds.
All of the guest were given additional councelling paid for by Dr Phil.

He tried to bring home the idea that phobias are nothing to be ashamed of and that help should be sought. People can then reclaim thier lives, and feel free from fear. He tried to get them to explain what thought went through thier heads when they were feeling panicked. None of them were good at explaining this. He also talked about rational thoughts, challenging the irrational ones, cognitive behaviour therapy and the benefits of drugs dealing with phobias.

More or less a public awareness show.
