I saw Dr. phil mentioned on this forum and wonder if any one seen him talk about SAD. I watch his show only accasionally. And did watch one show where a he got a very shy man to ask a girl for a date and the date turned out to be a big success. I know this doesnt work like that for those with SAD. If DR. Phil never brought up the topic of SAD then I beleive he has done a diservice to those afflicted with SAD. I thought of emailing his show but would like to find out first if any of you know if he ever educated the publuc about SAD.

The few times that I have watched Dr. Phil he seemed to bring up the topic of alcohlism a lot. The shrink that I saw about 7 years ago (he specialized in anxiety disorders) told me that about 50 % of alcoholics have SA as their major underlying symptom. I,m feeling mad enough to put an email together. If any of you reading this topic can add some inputs as to what I ought to put in the letter please post it on this thread. I will post the draft on this thread b\4 sending it to dr. Phils organization and will be very open to sugestions any of you might have.

Tried to respond last night but my computer went crazy. Hope to be able to complete this reply.
I heard that Oprah Wrinfery and Sally Rapheal both had a segment about SA. They had a psychologist on with a group of SA client he worked in group T. I am asumming the clients were far enough along to be able to speak to a tv adience. The fact they came on as a group helped I am sure.
I have been to many different 12 steps program including AA (though i was never an alcoholic), It was due to my desperate search to find something that would help. 12 steps didn't do a thing for me.
Dr. Phil probably gets thousands of email a week and bet he has a staff to read them and the staff keeps an eye out for ideas to use on his shows.
Dr. Phil is not the cure all therapist as he seem to present himself to be. Have read about some therapist criticism of him.
The reason I have some anger is because I spent over 30 years with numerous therapist about my SA symtoms and secondary problems. Not a one told me that other people had the same problems. Think that as a result I felt even more alone with my problems and had even more anxiety. Accidently found out about SA about 7 years ago and my mental outlook improved greatly and have acquired a lot better social skills since then.
Now that SA diagnosis been around and thearpy for it has a high success rate Dr. Phil with his massive tv audience can help educate a lot of people on the subject. I remember experiencing contempt from others who didn't understand why I couldn't overcome shyness. When Dr Phil did that one show where he got the shy man to ask for a date and turn out to be a huge success, that just pissed me off.
I managed a few dates myself when I was younger and most all were flops. I dated a couple women who were unattractive to me as I was trying to get social experience and maybe get more confidence.
That segment DR phil did was a bellitment of people with SA and a diservice.
I would be willing to go on a tv show but it would have to be with a group of other recoverying Social
phobes. I would do this because it could save a lot of uneccesary sufering from those suffering from SA.
I will work on the email with the thoughts that it will probably not be responded to. Will keep you posted.

I looked at Dr. Phil's website last night and discovered there were discussion forums. Searched into mental health\fears and phobias and found some entries dated 2003 and 2002. The topics were about SA symtoms and responses from others who had similar problems. There were quite a few "agoraphobia" submissions. Agoraphobia means fear of leaving the house. It appears to be an extreme form of SA in many cases.
Went to 2 meetings tonight and got to get some shut eyes. Will post later with some more thoughts.
Thanks you guys for your responses.

Sent email to the site Thunder submitted. Will type out what I wrote since couldn't save it.
Definitlymaybe, I remember how I use to find ways to avoid my in-laws during the holidays. In my employment was always underemployed or woked for abusive people and spent a lot of time looking for another job to get away from abusive bosses.
My social life now is much better than it use to be, which I am thankful.

I beleive Dr. Phil's staff would have his guests prepared ahead of time. And if there were a person too panicky the person would not be allowed to come on. He might have all the SA people video taped ahead of time to give testimonies on how SA affected there lives, and give accounts on unconstructive therapy experienced with "professional untrained in SA" the perhaps give testomies of successful treatments to give a posistive spin. . I think having a well versed therapist (well trained in treating SA) give the low down on SA would be very appropiate
. There is a therapist in Phonic Az.. that suffered from SA and he eventually came up with a program that appears to be very succesful. He has a web site and one can order tapes from him. He probably be an excellent informative expert. Like some of you mentioned , I wonder if Dr. Phil is open enough.
I did get email response from Dr. Phil's website. The letter said they receive large volume of mail. They attempt to read all mails and there is no guarantee they will respond to it.

Hema,
Check out http://www.socialanxietyinstitute.com, The doctor's name is Thomas Richard. I was never involved in the program since I have recovered enough to not feel a need for more therapy, It looks pretty legitimit. They also have support groups in the large cities for people who have completed his tape programs.
I found this site a couple years ago when searching SA sites and found this one about the same time.

I checked a couple days ago to see what his show was about and it was about a woman who was hustling to find a man who was a least a millionaire. Turned it off because it was a waste of my time to watch something of such about something so cheap. Don't understand why he would spend time on such topics when there are many serious issues that would have priorities. Now I think Phil is a realy good guys and had put on some excellent informative shows. In reality network tv is extremely competitive and he is probably forced (by his producer that do topics like that). What ever the case topics like the above just irritates me.

I didn't watch the whole show and perhaps Phil had a worthwhile message and Ci you would have a better opinion than I and I am guilty of pre-judging.
I think the black guy you are refering to is Montel whom I watch ocassionally and usually has worthwhile topics. Maury use to be worthwhile to watch and looks like he bent down to network pressures and I am disapointed with him as he was a good interviewer.

I didn't know that Maury Povich died and The "maury" which I never watched because it's so discuishing was never watched to actually see the host of the show.
Peekaboo, that jerk on the talk show is truly a diservice to community. He reminds me of other jerks who are so full of themslves they can't see the end of their noses.
It might be better to write to complain to the radio station that he is aired on. Also the advertisers of his program ought to notified of his promotion of prejudices on mental health issues. I wonder if there are mental health or anxiety associations that could have influences against guys like Lars Larson?
In fact I will research this.

I just logged onto http://www.nmha.org which is website for the national mental health association. Under the advocacy heading there is a link for "stigma alert" where you can email to nmha your complaint or you can call 1-800-969-nmha. Apparently they get many complaints about stigmas perpetuated by the medias and they appear to be doing something about it.

I remain puzzeled as to why he gives minimal attention to social anxiety disorder when it is a prevalent disorder and often debilitating. I remain disappointed with his show.
We should take on more responsibilties to promote educating the public. I had started a thread on this in the past and most of the submission revealed a reluctance to tell only their closes confidance about it. I feel discouraged but at the same time thank ful for this forum as it helps my moral.

So the question remains who could advocate for us folks or what other stragedies can be used to educate the public as countless sufferers of SAD continue to suffer and not know what it is they have and what can be done about it.
A couple thoughts come to mind are writing to the producer of Dr. Phils show. Maybe also write to or contact the Mental Health Association. There is also an Anxiety association beleive called Anxiety Association of America or American Anxiety Association. Went to a few of there support group meetings when I was in DAllas but got nothing out of it because there were no other SAD represented.
And I did not relate to the phobias the others were experiencing. Will be giving this some more thoughts.

Perhaps your suggestion will work and I or someone else ought to start a thread in one of the more general forum, that is one more widely read as the cricket thread is geared for the older members.
Incidently earlier on as mentioned in the early part of this thread I did email the show and got a response that they received my email and that there was no guarentee that they would do a show on the topic. I am very tired and ready for bed right now and will follow up on initiating your suggestion tomorow.

Thanks "feelingbetter". I began typing the new thread and am storing it in notepad. Realize that I need more time to post the thread as I want to make it a compelling statement to encourage others in this site to write to Dr. Phil. The new thread is forthcoming with no specific timetable this time.
