Where's a good (or even better) online or offline place to start looking for apartments?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

If you know the area you want to live in, you can just walk around there. Usually there will be signs saying they have apartments available and a phone number to call. And this way you also get to see the actual place and immediate area which might save you time and the effort of calling some places.

I've used rent.com and forrent.com. They're good for major cities, mediocre to useless elsewhere. The website of a newspaper in the area you're looking at will have classifieds to look at, too, though those don't have much detail.

Yeah, but then you have to make a lot more anxiety-producing phone calls. If you can get all the details online, you may only have to make a couple calls.
