An old friend from school invited me to his birthday at some bar or something somewhere this weekend. My first thought is not to go because there will be all these people from my old school there and it could be really awkward. Then again I don’t want to miss out on a possible chance to get out and also catch up with some people, and I can see how it might work out if it doesn’t get too awkward. Has anyone ever had an experience like this?

Well, you could 'test the waters', so to speak. Tell your friend you might have to be somewhere, there's a chance you'll have to leave. That way, if you get there and it's uncomfortable, you can use that as an excuse. That probably doesn't sound too good, but it's better than staying when you feel uncomfortable. If you get there and you like it, don't bring it up, just have a good time.
