what's the min requirments for smooth DVD viewing on a laptop?
i'm working on a limited budget, so was considering getting the dell inspiron 1200. but i heard that a celeron proc. with 256 MB RAM will be choppy and slow job.(that's what the 1200 has)

how about celeron with 512 MB RAM would that do it?

and i heard that win media player is slower that quickyime

A Celeron and 512MB of RAM should be enough if it has a decent video card. Also, I'm pretty sure neither WMP and QT don't play DVD's. If you really want a portable DVD player, why don't you just buy one instead of a laptop (especially if you are on a limited budget). You can get decent ones for under 200: http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCa ... tegory=491

Any modern laptop can do it, but your CPU choices are limited to either Pentium M or maybe Celeron M if you're hoping to get through Lord of the Rings on one battery charge.

I agree with Soma about portable DVD players... if all you want is movies, they're a better deal.

You should get 512MB of ram no mater which laptop you decide on. The difference between 256 and 512 in price isn't much but the speed improvement will be tons because windows needs that extra ram to run at a good speed. http://www.videolan.org/ is a great free dvd/video player for pc's that you should try out if you get your laptop.
