I love fashion and regularly buy fashoin/ lifestyle magazines, however, it struck me today how pontless this is to me, as the articles inside are always about 'Your best friend', 'Girlie nights out', 'Confiding in your friends', 'pleasurable sex', 'tips on being a good partner and communication', 'how to get promoted at work' etc etc. The fashipon part is even starting to look alien to me as I never go out so don't get to wear the clothes I go out and buy (on my own)!

Does anyone else feel like this?

The articles in some of those mags are pretty much crap. They are completely made up to entertain and often have no real value. If you want Fashion magazines, don't buy the ones with those articles, get something like InStyle or Vogue.

I very occasionally look at one of those mags, then am generally consumed with self-loathing - not because I don't resemble the 6 foot skinny models, but because I read something so inane and brainless! Having said that, Eve and Marie Claire occasionally used to have valuable, interesting articles in amongst the fluff...

It is annoying the way they seem to assume that everyone works in an office, everyone likes sex and the bloody city, everyone likes high-heeled shoes...

Its known that those mags are a killer of womens self esteem. Its appalling what junk they put in them. Keep away from them! I will only pick one up if it has an artical on a 'real woman' and Im in the doctors waiting room!

Ditto.

I stopped reading those magazines when I was about 16 because 1) I couldn't relate to having all those friends / relationships and one night stands and 2) It made me feel like crap. Anyway I rather read National Geographic or something.

oh god those are horrible.
i recently saw a headline that went something like this, "shopping! weight loss! boys! .. everything a girl needs."

the rare instances that i flip through them, i struggle to find anything remotely interesting or relevant to my life. it actually just kind of makes me feel bad about myself since there is so much focus on losing weight and looking good, its depressing.

the "woman's network" tv station isn't any better. seriously, worst channel ever. what a horribly inaccurate and embarrassing representation of the female sex.
on my mum's days off she watches it pretty much all day and ugh, can't get through 10 minutes of it. terrible. they should rename it

Although I don't approve I think it's better then picking up a celebrity magazine. Your best friend, Girlie nights out, Confiding in your friends, pleasurable sex, 'tips on being a good partner and communication, how to get promoted at work etc etc. are all things that can benefit your life in some way. Buying a celebrity magazine does the reader absolutely no value and I think they should be banned altogether. In corner stores we keep the cigarettes behind the counter yet when im about to pay for something there is atleast 30 magazines tailored to young, impressionable woman, and some of them are at the eye level of a 5 year old. In my mind that can do more harm to a young woman then smoking and I am outraged by it.

I'm a dude and I have only read a few of the top posts in here which talked about how demoralizing these mags can be to women with SAD. I just had to say this...

Those magazines absolutely disgust me and when I see a woman reading one it honestly COMPLETELY turns me off and makes me feel pretty disgusted and disinterested and, most significantly, untrusting of that woman, her honesty and her general morals. I see those things everywhere in the hospital I work at and... whaddya know... the place is filled with disgustingly insecure, rude, pathetically shallow, no sense of humor-having women (not ALL, but very close to it, unfortunately).

I just wanted to say that if you are disgusted with those magazines you should feel good about yourself because I guarantee you that 99% of guys are disgusted with women who read those types of mags. Feel free to get your girly thrills on by reading them if you enjoy them... I don't COMPLETELY judge a woman because shes reading one (guys like sports, girls like gossip, I'm not judging)... but don't ever let them effect your self confidence other than to boost it by realizing you are above all the BS shallow disgusting crap they put in there.

As for fashion mags, I am pretty disgusted with the ideal emaciated female body type they portray as well, but at least they aren't full of disgusting gossip/sex columns and page after page of brutal judgments on how people look or dressed.... freaking disgusting.

Yeah, I love reading women's lifestyle mags. It's just a fun way to kill time with fluffy information, reading about makeup, fashion, sex etc....It's enjoyable

No, I think they're insanely boring. :roll

I do like Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, but that's it.

I mostly read music magazines, like Mojo or Uncut.

Most of these magazines are pretty pointless, especially celebrity magazines these make me sick, that people would care so much what goes on in a celebrities life that they'll buy a whole magazine about it and read it, its pathetic. my sister and mother constantly watch E and go on celebrity blogs, they talk about it like if its a part of their daily lifes, its sad really.

Those magazines, both girlie mags (filled with inane gossip) and mens mags (basically softcore pornography with bits of text inbetween), are insults to the written. I have no idea why anyone would want to insult their own intelligence by reading them. Also, one of the things I noticed about magazines in general is that every other page is an advertisement, what is up with that?

I'm pretty anti-mainstream women's magazines.
They are simply one big advertisement. And I'm not talking about the actual ads everyother page. The articles themselves must reflect and encourage consumption of the sponser's products.

Plus I thoroughly disagree with the beauty myth they idealize.
