celexa was a double edged sword for me. helped with my sa and depression greatly but the sexual side effects were horrendous for me. i stayed on them for about 2 years as they made me feel so much better. i had to stop taking them about 6 months ago as i got fed up with not being able to have intercourse. very embarassing for a young guy. :roll i' m feeling pretty bad again and feel that i should go back on them but i cant. i tried other ssris and side effects are all the same. anyone else have these problems?

i already went to see my gp- i dont think she believed that the ssri was causing the problems. she put it down to depression causing sexual problems. i did mention welbutrin as i had heard it helps but she wasnt interested. i'll maybe go back and try again. thanks for reply :)

She sounds like a ****ing idiot. Of course SSRIs cause sexual dysfunction.

Show her the package insert, it's clearly written their that this drug can cause sexual dysfunction. SSRIs often do. A doctor should know this and a psychiatrist must know this. Adding Wellbutrin XL should counteract that SSRI side effect, augment the antidepressant effect of Celexa and give more energy/motivation.

I suggest you change doctors. She doesn't seem to know what she is talking about and is not being very receptive it seems like.

Also, luvox (another SSRI) supposedly causes sexual side effects much more rarely than the others. I haven't tried it yet though myself.

Any doctor who doesn't know SSRIs commonly cause sexual problems is an idiot. It's by far the most common complaint about SSRIs. They're so damn effective at causing problems that this problem is even put to medical use -- when Paxil is prescribed to treat premature ejaculation.

A new SSRI with a short half-life comes to the market - not as an antidepressant, but just to treat premature ejaculation. No joke! It's called dapoxetine.

That's gonna be such a failure of a drug -- who wants to be depressed and nauseous when having sex? That's what SSRIs do to most people in the short term "acute phase".

But don't forget, it's a very very big market. Really many guys suffer from premature ejaculation. You can look at the studies if you want to do something really boring. ;) Several times more guys in the placebo group discontinued clinical trials than in the dapoxetine group. The side effect profile is ok. The drug is already approved in some European countries including Finland, Sweden, Portugal, Austria and Germany (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dapoxetine).

Dapoxetine was created by Eli Lilly and Company and is credited to biochemist David T. Wong. Originally known as LY 210448, it was being developed by Lilly as an antidepressant.

After trying mirtazapine, I don't think you could pay me to go back on an SSRI.

Yeah, this does seem to be the case, luvox is one mysterious SSRI in that regard, in fact it's a wonder that no pharmaceutical company has tried to study and isolate this property of fluvoxamine, instead of pumping out new and "improved" SSRI after SSRI all boasting similiar side effect profiles.

Ask your doctor to add Wellbutrin or low dose selegiline. Should reverse the sexual effects, in high enough doses.
Doctors in the UK say they can't pescribe buproprion for anxiety because it isn't actually licenced for depression, never mind an maoi, damn the nhs.

True, I've had this experience too. To be fair, the only way I would think it should ever be used is in conjunction with another med, not on its own. But since this is the NHS we're talking about, the only thing they prescribe it for here is for helping people to quit smoking.

Yeah I recently found this out; it's so lame that we have such a sparsity of drugs available to affect dopamine [directly] except if you have Parkinson's or AD(H)D. If you're extremely treatment-resistant you might get a shot at Nardil though, which is licensed AFAIK.
