Hi All, I am new to the forum so hello to all.

To give you a big of background, I am a mid 30's gent with what would be deemed as a "high flying" job....throughout my career I have always avoided presenting / conferences as I have always had the shaky voice, wanting the ground to swallow you feeling...on a bad scale.

I have taken a new job, at a higher level, and with this territory comes regular presentations etc.....to no more than 20 people....which to some is nothing, but 20 people to me feels like the hardest thing in the world.

Anyway the doctor has prescribed me Beta Blockers...trouble is I have "tested" them at home..and felt no different (but was not nervous /anxious).....but next week I have a big presentation to our Board of Directors...and am now building this up and building this up...and I am terrified the medication will fail and I will be "found out".

I do not want to belittle anybody else but if I was doing school presentations I would no be worried (I think)...but I am worried that my job would be at risk if I cannot perform this necessary (regularly required) task.

Please can anybody share their experiences of public / presentation speaking fears and if Beta Blockers made a positive (or negative) difference.

Thank you to all.

Beta blockers will eliminate some of the physical symptoms of anxiety if you end up panicking, like shakiness, rapid heart rate.

You may want to combine it with a low dose benzo like xanax, if you can tolerate them. They are very helpful mentally and physically for very stressful situations like that. I imagine your doctor wouldn't mind prescribing them as needed if your job is at stake.

I take propranolol occasionally for presentations or times when I know I'll be extremely nervous. It works pretty well to eliminate the physical symptoms. No more shaky voice, butterflies, choking or adrenaline feeling. It makes me appear to be not nervous and it helps me feel less nervous. It kind of breaks the cycle. I have to take like 60 mg for it to work though.

I wouldn't mind taking it every day but my doctor prescribed me only 10 mg so I have to use it sparingly. I might ask and see if I can get a higher dosage.

hi

thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it.

I plan on taking 40mg Beta B and then another 40mg just before, so around 80mg in total, should do the trick?

I had not thought about taking a benzo as well, assuming the doctor would prescribe....will this help with the mental anxiety do you think, from your experience?

Also, can you take a benzo and a beta blocker together or is that dangerous / will they cancel each other out?
