any family members with SAD or other mental illness?....just curious.....

my family does not exhibit any mental illness...neither does my extended family (as far as i know)...i feel like i am the odd one of the normal family. that i am the only one with this severe shyness....

although i think that a little bit of this and a little bit of that can be found in everyone...for example, you can exhibit some OC tendencies in normal ppl who believe in superstition or athletes who do practice rituals for an upcomming tournament etc.

anyways, my main question....do you guys have any other family members with a mental illness? and please state what they are....i really hate using that term 'mental illness'....argh.....

Both sides here too. My mom was quiet when she was younger but now she talks and talks to practiclly anyone, so I don't know if it was SA she had... She's also had problems with alcoholism.
My dad has also had problems with depression, and I'm pretty sure he suffers from some from of SA. Growing up many of my memories of him he's on the couch, watching tv from the time he got home from work till he went to bed.
I've got 4 other sibs and we all tend to be the quiet, thoughtful type.

My mum appears to have mild SA.. my step dad as well.
My brother is about as big of an emotional wreak as I am.
My dad is a recovering drug addict.
Got an aunt with severe panic attacks.. who also used to be in a cult.
Got an aunt who's bipolar.
My grandpa has some sort of ocd where everything has to be cleaned and organized always and he annoys the hell out of everyone!
My uncle had all kinds of problems.. but he died when I was 2 and no one talks about him so I don't really know what kinds of problems they were.
My grandmas dad killed himself.. when he was in the middle of a card game with her.. though I have never heard why.
Heard stories of some great great aunt of mine who killed all 5 of her children while they were still babies.
My dads biological family is all wacked out.

Yes I come from a long line of crazy folks so I really didn't stand a chance :)

My dad's cousin has bipolar disorder, but I've never met him. Both my parents were shy when they were younger. My dad doesn't like talking on the phone or doing presentations for work and my mom has low self-esteem and gets depressed in certain situations. My brother would call himself shy, but he's a liar. :roll My dad's brother seems pretty shy as well as his family. My mom's parents were alcoholics and were situationally depressed. Other than that no other mental illnessess I know of.

My mother has been diagnosed with Delusional Disorder, which means I grew up in a very unstable home. Whats real and whats not?

My father was very shy and i believe he had social anxiety but those kinds of things were not known about back when. He was basically illiterate and had terrible self confidence because of it. He was however, a very smart man in that he could take and fix anything. He also was a bit of an inventor and used to divine for water.

There have been a number of mystics in the family which is a whole other stange ball of wax.

My mom's side of the family has a history of mental disorders. My mom tends towards depression and she used to be basically be a recluse, but that was because of her weight. I have a cousin that's having real mental problems right now. She's so young and absolutely gorgeous. It's heart breaking. My grandmother also had depression.

Both sides of my family exhibited symptoms of mental disorders.
Anxiety, depression, avoidant personality, social anxiety.

I have, at times, wondered how my life would have turned out had I been "rescued" from these people at a very early age.

I'll never know.

Same here. Except their problems weren't recognised as mental disorders. And no-one in the family talked about the problems. The people concerned were just thought to be a bit "sensitive". Thank goodness we can talk more openly about these kind of things now. Thank goodness for this forum!!

Yeah, my sister has bipolar, my brother's autistic, and I think my dad might have minor OCD but I'm not sure.

Mother: shows clear signs of OCD, but not bad enough to require treatment.

Father: Now dead. Was a strange man, who never socialized other than the bare minimum required for work. Did he has SA? I don't know. Schizoid personality disorder is my best guess.

Brother #1: has OCD -- he hoards everything like a pack rat. Maybe have generalized anxiety as well. Definitely does NOT have SA -- he's very social.

Brother #2: Very few friends, so some mild degree of SA may exist. He's in a strange situation, but I can't put a name to his problem(s).

An aunt (mother's side) who seems to get worked up over everything. She takes Valium as needed and I learned that she took Valium decades ago too.

That's as far as I can go, since I never knew any of my extended family, so I don't have a lot to go on. It would be interesting to draw up an entire family tree of lunacy.

My mother had depression and AvPD, her sister is schizophrenic, my brother is ADHD with bipolar, father is ADHD, his brother is bipolar, we've talked and I know that there is a long history on both sides of mental and emotional disorders. I have GAD, SP, PTSD, and depression but think that my SP, GAD are more from my history with my family and outside experiences than a genetic thing. The depression I can see being inherited and of course there's no question that post traumatic has nothing to do with genes.

:thanks

My father's side has had anxiety and depression, or so they've told me because my dad and more of his siblings were pretty inhibited in school, my dad claims he was very shy in school and dreaded being called on.
