I took 5HTP a few days ago, within 30 minutes I felt sick to my stomach. I felt extremely drowsy and went into a deep sleep for around 9 straight hours after taking it. I definitely didn't have a positive experience with it, but I might be willing to try it again.

The first day I took it I was also taking L-theanine and drinking a few Smirnoff Ice's (probably not the best idea? idk) but I felt great (might have had something to do with the Smirnoffs haha). I woke up the next day and took another 100mg of 5-HTP before starting my day. I felt so terribly drowsy all day and very lethargic! I had work that day, anxiety was a little down but I felt so empty, it was a nightmare. My favorite part of my shift is when we all get together and have staff dinner, I usually pile up my plate at the buffet. But this time all I got was a little salad and I could barely even finish it without feeling nauseous. I was also very irritable. I think the dose that I took was too high for me, I should of take 25mg or 50mg. I don't think I want to experiment with it any further, not worth all the trouble.

I read you shouldn't drink within 5 hours of taking it. I don't see how a few smirnoffs could be a problem though. I just got some 5-HTP but I read how it may cause some heart valve problem? I need to find out more but I doubt it will be an issue... (even Icy Hot kills a few people every year).

It definetly would cause you to have a supressed appettie though. If I were you I would go back to 25mg for a little while and then go up to 50 and keep it there.

So you really felt it affect you? Did you notice any positives in terms of SA?

I finished off my only bottle of 5htp here are my experiences

Vivid and uncomfortable dreams occurred even when I took the pills early in the morning,

The pills were effective in sort of soothing depression, but i decided they are not for me. I noticed that they caused me to sort of loose my edge and be more okay with everything that was going on. Though after a few weeks this effect tappered off.

But they are definately worth a go for most people, it does cause a positive change in mood for sure. Just not what a mid 20s male would be looking for though, because i felt like it killed my drive to do anything

I don't know if this is something I should worry about, but can you do intense exercise while taking 5-htp, such as running? I read somewhere that certain medications (like beta blockers) can give people heart palpitations or something if they try to do really heart-racing exercise.

I really did experience the upset stomach and the most bizarre dreams of my life.
It seemed to be working, taking the edge off my anxiety. I took it pretty religiously for a month, but after that it seemed to stop working. Good placebo and good for lucid dreams, but that's it haha

IMO this is good if you don't have access to antidepressants and want to try something. It definitely worked but only for a week or two. SO if you're in a very bad place this could help you for a little while.

I take it on-and-off because I get lazy, so I can't comment on the effectiveness too much. Didn't really make me tired, although it did when combined with Valerian. The crazy dreams...yep. Not really too bad, actually pretty exciting from my usual dreams of blankness.

This is my question too, but for weight lifting. (Heavy) weight lifting is already very dangerous to the heart, especially for me since I'm at risk for an enlarged valve.

Not to be nosey, but why are you at risk for an enlarges valve? I have MVP and already have a funky valve. My MVP is bad to the point I get bad palpitations. So I hear that 5 htp can be risky on the heart, is this true?

I bought two bottles of 5htp and it does absolutely nothing for me at all. I had such high hopes for it but alas...

High blood pressure is known as a "silent killer" - it affects our heart and our arteries, increasing our risk of heart attack and stroke often without showing any symptoms.Coverage can arise when the surgery must be performed for medical reasons such as to correct a breathing problem. Many foods contain AGEs, like those with significant browning, or with directly added AGEs ( as flavors or colorants). That is how we were raised and conditioned to think and eat, and that is how most of continue to think and eat today--in spite of the fact that there is a wealth of information that tells us that it is the very "Four Food Groups" that has led and continues to lead Americans to premature, life-robbing diseases and early deaths.Abstain for sometime from intercourse so that the sperm count increases.

I took 5-htp for 2 years on and off

IMO it is effective for only mild depression

It gave me a sense of contentment. I took different brands, "Nature's Sunshine", and Natrol (i think it was)... I finally settled on Natrol 200mg, taken 1x, and I took it nightly with ambien. I would have some crazy dreams if I had been off of the 5-htp for awhile.

5-htp may be worth a shot for some people, but if you've made it this far in your quest to get better.. you should see a Dr. and I'm guessing there aren't too many Doctors out there who would recommend this product to anyone.

5HTP didn't work especially well for me, so.... I tried tryptophan, 5HTP's precursor. I've read that if one does not work, try the other because there are differences in how one's unique body metabolizes substances. Glad I did, it continues to work well for me.
I hear you all about the drowsiness. I quit an SSRI cold turkey with the help of glutamine (helps weaken or abate symptoms of addiction) and was desperately tired no matter how much sleep I got. I thought the heavy sleepiness was due to SSRI withdrawl. Or maybe it was the GABA? I dunno.

5-HTP The Effects and Taken With Large Amounts Of Alcahol

I started taking 5-HTP sometime ago. My first few times I was very paranoid and thought I would die - I always react like this when I take any kid of drug or supplement I don't know what will happen. But once I understand the feel and understand what to expect I am fine. I take it a few times each week. And it does 'lift your mood'.

I am a big drinker and drink most days, but when im not this makes a great substitue for me without wanting many beers. But I heard that you shouldn't take 5-HTP when having beers. So I wanted to do a little test. After 12 large cans! Yes 12! haha.. ! I decided I would rip one of the tablets up and have 1/4 .. 1/2 of it in powder form (which is ment to hit you faster i think). Whilst the effects were more dramatic, I soon fell a sleep and was fine the next day.

I wouldn't recommend doing this after 12 beers for most people. But I'm not sure a beer or 2 a few hours after taking the tablet will be much of an issue.

Just thought i'd share this with you all.

From what I've read you want to keep this under your tongue, not in your stomach.

If you're having weirder than usual dreams or you heart is beating faster causing you to sweat you've taken too much. If you feel sick after swallowing the pill you keep it under your tongue until it dissolves.

Have you had your thyroid tested? I have low thyroid and adrenal function, from years of anxiety-caused burnout. 5-HTP and Tyrosine are both recommended for treatment, unless it's so bad that replacement hormone is needed. I've had great results lately with Tyrosine, but haven't used 5-HTP in a long time.
