Hi Heather, welcome to SAS

I have taken Propranolol for my SA, but I haven't taken it for very long. I have noticed it helps sometimes, and other times it doesn't help at all. The first time I took it, it made me feel a bit more anxious, but I am willing to try to take it a bit longer to see if it helps.

I use it when needed and it helps me - my simptoms are heart punding, trembling voice etc., whenever I have to speak in a meeting or in front of a group of people.
May I ask what is your anxiety related to ?
Take care !

I think I'm just so used to Xanax that I haven't given Propranolol a proper chance to experience it by itself. I combine both from my prescription when I should probably try and see if I can compare and contrast their effectiveness separately.

Didn't MJ overdose on Propofol?

She is taking propranolol which is not the same medication as propofol. But correct me if I am wrong on that... I do know that Propofol is injected into the veins as I was given it before taken to ICU years ago (I had to be put on a mechanical ventilator and that is a common drug to give patients when that happens).

I didn't like it. Made me more stressed and lethargic.

PTSD doesn't mean you're going insane.
It means you're sane and reacting from something that was insane.

I was prescribed this for my SA about five years ago but stopped taking it because it didn't help at all.

I need to know, will this drug eliminate all of my physical symptoms, and is it acidic or acid-producing in the body? I will take this medicine if I can ask for it the right way.

Hi, I am B. Propanolol helps with physical symptoms of SA. Whether it be trembling, shakiness, heart pounding (mainly my symptom), and sometimes sweats. It should be taken about 45 min-1 hr before a highly anticipated event (social, speech, and performance(s)). I just graduated pharmacy school so if anyone has any questions for me you can shoot the questions in my inbox. Again propanolol isn't meant to be taken everyday but on an as needed basis. I feel if you take it right with the mind set that it will not make the anxiety go away you should be fine.

It has saved my life and numerous occasions. From speech class to having to deal with police over an altercation with a neighbor. Just last month I was able to get through a job interview with 8 people on the panel and get the job thanks to propranolol.
I have been using it for 6 years and looking at where I was to where I am now it has been a miracle. I take the green generic 40mg pills
There is one caveat and that is that it only deals with the physical symptoms. In my case, the crazy thoughts still run wild in my head.

It's not really meant/supposed to help with general social anxiety. It's really only meant to be used occasionally like before performance situations to help tamper the physical sensations of performance anxiety.

I don't think beta blockers can help with low self esteem or racing anxious thoughts that often accompany/perpetuate social anxiety. For these I believe you need ad's, benzos, cbt, etc.

There is an extended release version of propanolol that I take and it last for 10-12 hrs, so it is great at keeping those SA physical symptoms at bay almost all day long. This also eliminates the need to plan for when you need to take like you do with the regular version of it. I find propanolol, in general, stops most of those quick bursts of anxiety symptoms that you can get, which could be considered panic like symptoms. Those quick bursts usually start me down a bad long term anxiety path and if I can stop those then I am usually not crippled so bad from an anxiety producing event (i.e. I recover much faster). Like others have said, it doesn't stop the negative thoughts, but this in combination with a benzo has really helped me better control my SA.

If anyone has figured out the meaning of life, please enlighten me.

I've taken it for pain. I was tired all the time. I would pass out while watching my baby so I had to stop.

Propranolol works great when used on an as-needed basis before speeches, work meetings, etc. Read the reivews for propranolol on drugs.com. You take it about an hour before the event. I find combining a beta-blocker like propranolol with a benzo like Klonopin really works wonders, although they will probably make you a bit tired. You will have to go through a bit of trial and error to see how much you need to reduce your anxiety. Some people need a lot. Some people need very little.

I was prescribed this (to be taken every day) for generalized anxiety, and the way the GP explained it to me was that it limits how fast your heart can beat. So it's not directly an anxiolytic, but may work indirectly by reducing the heart rate. It did indeed do that for me - while on it my heart never raced - but it didn't do much else.

I take it for the akathisia induced by abilify. It doesnt seem to do much for my anxiety itself, but it takes the edge off the restlessness.

10 mg is a low dose. it will not do much. it's only supposed to be taken before a social event you might be anxious about. it does help with physical symptoms, but like I said, you're on a low dose. usually 20 mg is the normal dose according to my psychiatrist, but it's okay, i had to start on 10 mg also. you will need to accompany it with medication that helps the psychological symptoms.
