This is just disturbing!

I was just reading the newspaper from saturday and I saw a story about how canadians feel about mental illness. It said that 50% of the population that praticipated in the poll said they would never marry someone with a mental illness and it also said that people are not trusting of Doctors, Lawyers, Babysitters, Teacher, etc with a history of mental illness. When I read this I got really angry. They don't even know the person and they just assume because someone has a mental illness that they are dangerous! WTF I would be happier if I could relate to someone that has a mental illness and see how successful they are like a Doctor, Lawyer, or Teacher. The general population really needs to do research and not just assume people are dangerous cause they have a medical condition and not judge. When someone tells you they have cancer or parkinsons are they automatically dangerous, isn't it the same thing, it's not like it's contagious and still if it was I would not discriminate. Well that's how I feel, I would love to hear others opinions.

That surprises me! Half of the population wouldn't marry someone with a mental illness? What are they afraid of?

I can understand not wanting anything to do with people with certain mental illnesses...like people who are abusive/controlling/etc(I hate people like that)... but I wouldn't see why they wouldn't want anything to do with people with mental illnesses, in general... social anxiety & depression, etc... wouldn't make a person "mean" or "dangerous" or anything and so I don't see why anyone would be afraid(or whatever their reason is) of somebody for that reason...

That's Canada! I really don't get it either. People are just really judgemental I guess and those who are different then them I guess they fear.

I think it would of been good if they asked what do they think of when they hear the words "mental illness". Maybe in their minds they thought those words meant some psycho or nut job.

The definition of 'mental illness' will vary depending on who you ask. I don't think a generic survey like that has any bearing on, well, just about anything.

It depends on the type and severity of the illness. You probably don't want to go near someone with severe schizophrenia or psychosis. On the other hand, people with anxiety need compassion and understanding

I don't really care."Mental illness" is such a wide term, and can encompass so many different people.

And in many cases i wouldn't want to be around anyone with a mental illness either, and certainly not marry.

i dunno man...who knows...ya know??

There's a sad thing in this world called stigma.... they imagine that all people with mental illness are in straight jackets, climbing the walls, delusional-they just stick a label on it and put it aside.

'O the depth of God's richness and wisdom and knowledge! How unsearchable his judgements are and past tracing out his ways are!'-Romans 11:33

Re: This is just disturbing!

SA isnt a mental 'illness' so to say. I think under mental illnesses they meant psychopathic people, people with down syndrome, people with severe autism, people who are abusive and control freaks, the list continues. Its not exactly fair to judge by these factors either, but people are frightened whether the could manage to live with a person like that or whether they can trust the person. Not everyone knows about psychology and you cant blame other people for that - just like you dont get other people, not everyone gets mental disorders or illnesses

I understand not wanting anything to do with someone with a mental illness. For me, it all depends on what you mean by "mental illness", and the severity of the illness. For instance, I would not let a person who is paranoid schizophrenic care for my child (if I had one).

Most polls are very biased, so take it with a grain of salt. The way the questions are asked is VERY important.

Most people relate mental illness to psychopaths, sociopaths, alcoholics, etc

Frankly I am surprised it wasn't higher

Technically, we're not mentally ill. We just react to things more than other people.

It must be your health care system

Anxiety Disorders are classified as mental illness, in Canada anyway.

Re: This is just disturbing!

There are certain mental illnesses that do make people more unstable and dangerous than others. Unfortunately, when people hear the term "mental illness" they automatically assume someone dangerous rather than understanding that "mental illness" includes more than just the dangerous people. The don't understand that there are those like us with SA that are perfectly normal and nice people. This is due, I think, to the way society has portrayed and advertised mental illness in a way that has put us all under one blanket with the more dangerous forms of mental illness. It is going to have to be society that changes that way of thinking so that people can understand that there are various forms of mental illness, some more dangerous than others but nevertheless, should not all be placed in the same category.
