It's just too depressing. It's too much.

Emmerdale is way better.

My dad used to watch it. When a show is more bleak and depressing than real life (and your real life is mine,) while somehow feeling real (unlike US TV which never has the same effect,) you know something's wrong there.

I don't like it at all.

Who in their right mind would wanna live in Albert Square? They're all sleeping with each other, murdering each other and scamming each other, and if they're not, they're trying to. And no-one talks normally to each other, it's all overly dramatic and intense for absolutely no reason. None of the men know how to speak without whispering. It's so weird. The whole thing makes me cringe.

I could continue bashing the show but I won't. I just don't really like dramas or soaps all that well, apart from Doctor Who.

Wilfred Mott: Oh, Doctor... what about you now? Who've you got? I mean... all those friends of yours...

The Doctor: They've all got someone else. Still, that's fine. I'm fine.

hoping not to be offensive,

I think the other way. I need it. every episode. the stories last long and can be delightfully predictable. every last knock at end of an episode I know where it's leading. positive or negative to be cherished. real life, deaths, surprises. mostly based around. people's arguments from the 1980s base. rarely boring. can get thru a weekend without it. Monday and all 4 broadcast days relished. structure I miss having from my employed times. when sport gets in the way.. Wednesdays not shown, resorting to Coronation, Emmerdale... others.. clearly tripe in comparison... ahh Hollyoaks. I don't want any prettiness.

I can't stand it. It's so bleak and depressing. The acting is vvank and the characters are boring. At least Corrie has some comic relief.

I used to watch Eastenders back in the early 2000's. It had different (much better) script writers back then, and whilst still grim, it was actually fairly entertaining.

Soaps in general are ****e though. Was never a fan of Hollyoaks or Emmerdale. Brookside had some decent storylines and introduced the world to Ray Quinn. Brookside was filmed on an actual housing estate and still exists, although many of the houses have been done up, you can still tell it's the same street.

Oh neighbours was entertaining throughout the 90's and early 2000's when I watched it growing up. Haven't seen it in many years now but used to watch it most days when I was into it.

Is it that British soap that has gone for ages (as in way before I was born)?

Red Dwarf was good but I was a child when I watched it so that might not be true. I also quite liked the IT Crowd and The Mighty Boosh. Life on Mars when it came out. Some other things years ago. Being Human seemed fairly good but can't remember if I finished it, also watched Merlin briefly before getting bored (I think I liked the idea of it more than the reality.) I also like some clips of Peep Show I've watched online.

Other than that UK TV is mostly good for documentaries that don't sound like they're being narrated by the guy who did all the film trailers from the 90s with 7000 advert breaks and dramatic cuts. But yeah aside from that I'm not a fan of a lot of it.

you know me Bob, I usually love your well thought out posts and I don't like to be rude but have you ever heard of the likes of "Poirot" and "The vicar of dibley" ? Or realised that Gold is playing re runs of "The Bill?"

I wish people would at least make an effort to do some research before coming out with statements like yours.

@Persephone The Dread yeh, some ok stuff on historically, I just gave up actively watching maybe 15 years ago, because what with all the TV shows about getting larger houses and cooking shows and reality shows and talent shows and celebrity dancing in the jungle on ice and all the ****ing bleak news about how the government are actively trying to **** everyone's life up, and the endless adverts, I decided it was better just to not bother to preserve my sanity.
@SFC01 all of those shows are also ****. . Had you mentioned Howards Way or Lovejoy I might have changed my tune though.

Now we are talking - Howards Way !! Filmed down the road from where I grew up, basically about how we all live down here, money, sailing etc. We used to drink in the pub that used to be in it, cos it was rammed full of girls all the time. Btw I never watched it and if I did I can't remember !!

@Persephone The Dread , loved the boosh -

Lol yeah it's a great combo of surrealism and comedy. I saw a short part of one episode of Noel Fielding's newer show think it was called Noel Fielding's Luxury Comedy and it wasn't really funny and was too weird though.

Totally not realistic

Sadly, in '82, Chanel 4 commissioned Brookside

Like a sheep the BBC followed suit with EastEnders

While you SCREAM at your woman, there's a man, wishing he could talk softly in her ear...

While you HUMILIATE, OFFEND, & INSULT her,
there's a man flirting with her, & reminding her, how wonderful she is.

While you HURT your woman,
there's a man wishing he could show her love

While you make your woman CRY,
there's a man stealing smiles from her.

never seen a single episode... I never intend to. I heard about it. But it's true for some people watching other people's misery makes them feel a bit better about themselves

there are no shortcuts in life... there are no free meals in life ... life is short and cruel, but beautiful!... I always do my best - no regrets... it's never too late to be what u might have been
