How was your first time ever taking medication for your anxiety?

When I was recently in therapy they had me on medication. One was for sleep. I'm not sure of how to write about my experience. This is all I have to say..

What about your first experience? Share if you like. {It can be hard.}

My first experience with meds for anxiety would have been Serepax (Serax in the US) - a benzo. Similar to Valium or Xanax. It was wonderful - too good really because I kept taking it for ages.

I did my first Diploma on it back in my 20's, then started on Xanax - which I took basically all the time to do everything. Not a good idea. Had several stays in hospital/rehab to get off that stuff. While I was there they tried me on an anti-psychotic - Seroquel, which was used for a while at a very low dose for anxiety. I hated it and refused to take it after a day or so.

Nowadays the most commonly prescribed med for anxiety seems to be an SSRI - which sort of worked for me a bit - as well as making me gain weight and go completely manic. (Lexapro)

What did you take for sleep? I've been on just about every sleep med there is. Right now I'm on Gabapentin (off label) and Rozerem. I've been on a bunch of SSRIs for anxiety but none of them seemed to work.

I didn't really notice much in terms of changes from medication. Typically it takes 2-3 weeks before a medication takes effect, which can make things seem really subtle.

Subtle, basically of very little benefit.

For me, Sertraline 200mg, no improvement, no sides, nothing.

My first experience taking a drug for anxiety made me kind of tipsy and wobbly in the legs, it definitely took most of the edge off my anxiety but after a few months some of the anxiety came back.

I was unwilling, at first, to go into the trial and errors of finding the right meds. I met with a Naturopath, who helped me a lot. At some point, she told me I needed some "chemicals", as her natural products couldn't help at the point I was. I take Celexa now at 20mg. I don't really notice it anymore. It does help to slow down thoughts and to relax more. Anyway, at first I noticed the effect more, but now I just make sure I take the medication daily!

I was put on Paroxetine and my social anxiety diminished considerably. After that I cannot really recall how I felt.
