doubts about neurontin (gabapentin)

this I think is a fair summary of neurontin, its promoted for off label use for social anxiety by some psychs but has very doubtful benefits

re: doubts about neurontin (gabapentin)

It's more of a mood stabilizer than an anxyolitic, although it doesn't really serve much purpose as a mood-stabilizer (unless combined with another mood stabilizer and/or AD). It CAN be helpful with anxiety, irritability, and/or sleep. Couple things to keep in mind (I didn't read the WIKI article, so sorry if I'm repeating things):

Make sure your kidneys are in good shape before starting the med. It's not contraindicated in patients with renal problems, but a lower dose should be administered because that is where it's excreted. Starting dose = 300mg/day. Ultimate doses = 900-1800mg/day (in divided doses). Some have gone up to 3600mg/day. However, given it's short half-life, you don't wanna go over 12 hours to take your next dose. Side effects? somnolence, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, and vomiting. Weight gain is an occasional side-effect, too.

I'll be blunt: it's the ultimate sugar pill. Nothing positive. Nothing negative (except cost). Simply nothing.

I take it in conjunction w/ Prozac. It helps me sleep. On occasion when I run out, I spend the whole night w/ butterflies in my stomach and I don't get any sleep. I know it sounds like a placebo effect, but I've had the same thing happen when I forgot to take my meds. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't sleep until it occurred to me that I forgot my pills.

I dunno if it helps w/ the anxiety or if the combo w/ Prozac helps me, but I've had a ton of improvement over the last few years.

It works for me. Not a dramatic effect, but I'd say my baseline anxiety level reduced by 10-15% when I added it to the Lexapro and Inderal I'm taking.

I've spent 35 years taking meds, and I know when I feel something, and when it's a placebo effect.

What's interesting is that some people SWEAR it does nothing, and some people SWEAR it does.

Has a grand total of one line regarding its use in the treatment of social phobia, and it's not even clear what it's saying. (The cited references either are not relevant to the wikipedia author's statement, or actually contradicts it!)

Medication-related posts are for brainstorming purposes only. Talk to your doctor.

My meds: Parnate, Lamictal, Wellbutrin, trazodone

You may be doubtful about it, but I see no reason not to give it a try. It will either work from day one or it won't. The only thing to try it if doesn't work on the first day is taking a higher dose.

For me it worked really damn well. I even ended up going a bit crazy with it and taking doses of over 10g at once.
