In my experience, trying to 'force' discussions with people who don't want to talk, is going to have the opposite effect.
My sisters ex was like that. He didn't speak with me for the longest time - but I didn't really bother with it either. Eventually he started asking me stuff and engaging in discussions, actually, more actively than most people.
Of course, people are different and this might not work in your case, but my point is more so with the "don't feel compelled to - do when you feel like you genuinely have something to say"
