How to tell my mom I have social anxiety?

Hey everyone! So I’ve been suffering from social anxiety for years and wanted to tell my mom but never had the chance. She has several health issues: it started with heart problems 4 years ago and this year she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She went through 2 surgeries and many treatments and my father told us not to say or do anything that will stress her. I don’t feel comfortable enough to tell my father about my problem but I can’t live like this anymore. I need to tell her but I feel like it is never the right time. I told my only friend and she acts as if I never said a thing. I really don’t know what to do and who to tell but my mom is not an option. I also don’t have a job and not a driver license (I started learning but got a panic attack and stopped), and my town doesn’t have much public transportation. So I can’t do treatment without her knowing. I’m hopeless. any advice?

Jee that's a difficult situation and I'm very sorry to hear it - it must be hard living in a town like that without much transportation. Is there a GP or someone in the town you could talk to about it? Maybe they could at least help with a bit of counselling or something.

How big is the town you live in? Would they have a psychologist there?

Unfortunately not. I live in a very small town and I barley talk to people here. And there are therapists in a nearby city the problem is I can't get out of this place without a car 😞

To be honest with you there is no other way than to just sit down with her and have a heart to heart talk with her.

idk how other people do it. I had to have a total breakdown. and then they tried to sweep that under the carpet and ignore it until I confronted them about it. if people haven't noticed, it's probably out of willful ignorance and they will resist you.

but yeah the only way is to talk to them.

i had to have some strange coming-out speech in order for my family to understand i had SA. i basically don't remember anything about it other than the fact i did it when i was around 15-16, and fleeting images of that scene.

it was absolutely AWFUL.

but you have to do it.

Well, I guess the first order of business would be to get a diagnoses. People tend to not believe you if you tell them you have something that has not been diagnosed.

Probably just tell her you're having problems and describe the symptoms and tell her you'd like to see a doctor about it. Any decent doctor would refer you to a specialist most likely.
