Wood auger is for wood
Auger bits could be for sand or what ever the bit happens to be designed for .

. WTF is wrong with me

Earth augers:

Wood auger bits:

Technically, a wood auger is a type of auger bit. Augers (in general) are used for boring, usually into wood, earth, or ice.

im glad to see ladies asking interesting technical suggestions.

personally i have a decent quality carpenters brace ( with a ratchet) which takes the wood augers.

frankly i would prefer this when drilling a large diameter and deep hole in wood, over using spade, or forstner bits in an electric drill.

Yeah it's interesting to see this kind of thread, I only know about augers because they were mentioned in a childrens' book I know well. Where they drill into earth in a dam attempting to find treasure, and eventually cause a massive flood, albeit through explosives.

I agree that this post might be rather unusual for SAS. Surprisingly, there're more responses here than on the electricians forum. Thank you!
