Murder hornets have arrived

We're all doomed.

Many years ago, I watched a crazy documentary on the Asian giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia), which is a scary-*** hornet that preys on honeybees among others, and also kills a number of humans every year in Japan. The documentary showed how they devastated European honeybees that had been imported to Japan, but also showed that the native Japanese honeybees had a clever defence against them by trapping and killing the hornet scout that came to mark the beehive for attack. But this is one scary creature and I still remember that documentary today.

Well, you'll be pleased to hear that the big news today is that the Asian giant hornet has now arrived in North America, spotted in the US in Washington state and in Canada in British Columbia. They're calling it the "murder hornet", appropriately. As if coronavirus was not enough, 2020 keeps shovelling more deadly threats on us. I'm now convinced we live in some ridiculous simulation.

This is the summary on Twitter:

Quote:
Reporting for The New York Times, Mike Baker describes the two-inch Asian giant hornet species known as the "murder hornet," which was first sighted in Washington state last fall. The invaders "use mandibles shaped like spiked shark fins to wipe out a honeybee hive in a matter of hours." Capable of killing humans, their venom and stinger "make for an excruciating combination that victims have likened to hot metal driving into their skin."

Yeah I remember that. I like how weak the European insects/arachnids etc are because they have less need to defend themselves, it's cute. They need to leave the European honeybees alone >:-|

I jump in many different heads through these words and poems
Always hoping maybe the next leap'll be my leap home

And all our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death
Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow,
A poor player that strut's and fret's his hour upon the stage and is heard no more,
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

i wonder how long it's gonna take for it to establish itself across the continent. for some reason, i think the idea that north america has 'the next couple of years' to prevent that seems optimistic.

The European hornet was introduced to North East America in the 19th century and never spread to the West (it spread to Iowa and Louisiana,) but this species is more aggressive.

Like Washington state and honeybees haven't had enough crap to deal with already. -_-

If I don't reply to you, it's NOTHING PERSONAL. It's my ANXIETY.

Wow, I looked up pictures of them and they really do look like they're in a murderous rage, with angry eyebrows and all.

Once they reach SoCal they'll have an epic battle with the killer bees.

On the plus side, maybe these murder hornets can help enforce stay-at-home orders so that a bunch of morons don't gather outside and spread coronavirus. Maybe the hornets were sent to save us all.

We have to Bee alert

“I am an excitable person who only understands life lyrically, musically, in whom feelings are much stronger as reason. I am so thirsty for the marvelous that only the marvelous has power over me. Anything I can not transform into something marvelous, I let go. Reality doesn't impress me. I only believe in intoxication, in ecstasy, and when ordinary life shackles me, I escape, one way or another. No more walls.”

Right?? I'm all about bees, beetles and dragonflies, but these guys are just too much.

Haha have you seen that video of the Japanese honeybees cooking the murder hornet to death with their body heat though? That's some sweet revenge.

Aww, I like jumping spiders. Did you know there's big sized jumping spiders? I didnt know that until like 3 years ago. Pretty cool.
@cafune lol xD I do think it's a popular opinion to like jumping spiders. But other spiders, probably not. Although, more people these days like them I think.
