When I was little and the light was turned off to go to sleep, I always saw little bits of colour flying around in the dark, and I pretended they were fairies and they were checking the house and keeping everyone safe. I really thought the little squares of colour were real. They were like pixels, and they moved.

I used to have fun pretending a lot of things were different to how they really were, and that most things were some kind of illusion. I didn’t believe any of it because they were things I made up. I still do this sometimes because it makes things more interesting.

* That when I wasn’t there or I was asleep, my parents and sisters had very different voices to the ones I knew, and the ones I heard were their fake ones.

* That I was a sleeping dinosaur and I was having a dream, and everything in the world was only a part of my dream and none of it was real. Because it was all my imagination, maybe dinosaurs weren’t real, either, and I was really a sleeping ant, if those existed.

* That no one who lived anywhere else had to eat or drink or use a toilet, and they couldn’t feel pain, but they had to pretend they were the same as us, so they sold food and drink in all of their shops and had toilets everywhere for their visitors and used it all (or pretended to) when being watched so no one suspected anything.

* That maybe pets were really furry robots with batteries in them somewhere no one has ever been able to find.

* That people in photos could see, and if they saw something you didn’t want them to, you could move your hand in front of their eyes to erase their memories.

Reality is an illusion. I actually said that waaay back, when I was just a kid, and it blew my teacher's mind, she was all like "How did you know that!" I was just as nutty back then, as I am now I suppose. I used to have a print out of it, complete with a sun in the horizon, I spelled reality as realty though, which my oldest brother pointed out a few years later when he saw it hanging from my closet. I took it down shortly after that. I wish I still had it though, it looked pretty cool, I created it on an old Apple 2e computer, and it was printed out on a dot matrix printer, I thought it was pretty sweet.

I later found out that is what Einstein said, perhaps I heard him say it at one point, and just repeated it. I don't think so, because I was pretty young. Back then, i was really into dungeons and dragons, so the fantasy life had already begun, so it would have made sense for me to make that connection.

I still hold that statement to be valid, reality is an illusion, it really is, what we experience is just a simulation built in our meat computers It is likewise, incredibly distorted by our biases, upbringing, and all sorts of things.

foresight, hindsight, insight, oversight---just about any sight, really. Except, maybe, Lucite.

Pure selflessness

I think almost every action has some sort of self-interest in mind, whether conscious or unconscious.

This is a good one and I agree. I think it's one of those illusions that people don't really want to hear about because it can be hard to accept that one's good deeds are actually done out of self-interest rather than selflessness.
