Windows Media Player won't work :( HELP!

My Windows Media Player was working perfectly fine yesterday but now when I open it, it won't open...I mean it shows that the window is open down on the little task bar thing(or whatever the heck it's called) but I right click that and I can't maximize it or anything so I can't use it at all. It's like it's permanently minimized
What can I do to make it work again & has anybody else had this problem?

Also I tried restarting my computer and that didn't work either!

Re: Windows Media Player won't work :( HELP!

Some other people could probably give you better advise than me...It sounds like you inadvertently hit the wrong button/changed the settings to Windows Media Player and are now in 'Mini-mode'....Does the little Windows Media Player control panel come up, but only minimized? Just with the controls, 'Stop', 'Play', 'Fast Forward', 'Rewind' etc? If so, there should be a little arrow with a dash underneath it on the bottom right corner of the Media Player window...Left Click that to return from 'Mini-mode' to 'Full Mode'...The only other advice I can suggest is to restore your computer to the day before you first had this problem....Or to install and use VLC Media Player which is very highly regarded....

You mean the options to maximize/minimize are greyed out? What about right clicking on it, then selecting "move". Then you should be able to hold down left click and drag it till it's visible. Maybe it just got stuck off-screen somehow.

So its not opening at all? You just click on the icon to open it and it closes?

You can try downloading the media player installation and RE-installing it overtop to see if that fixes it

Yeah, it won't open at all...I can't use it at all. It shows down on the bar at the bottom that it's open...but it won't actually open up. I can't view it, I can't see or listen to my songs on it or anything.
And thanks for the replies...I'm gonna try reinstalling it tomorrow!

Did you try System Restore back to before you noticed the problem? That might work as a last ditch solution....

Re: Windows Media Player won't work :( HELP!

Something else you might want to try...

Go to Start -> Run -> type in "regedit", hit ok.

Expand the HKEY_CURRENT_USER key on the left hand side until you get to the following spot...

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer]

Then right click on the MediaPlayer folder and select to rename it. Rename to something like MediaPlayer_old. Then go and start windows media player again. Renaming this key causes windows media player to think it was just installed and recreates a bunch of your settings. This may help if something got messed up bad.

Re: Windows Media Player won't work :( HELP!

Try these 2 things

1.) Are you on Vista or XP? Are you able to uninstall Windows Media Player 11?

See If you can by going into the Add/REmove programs or the Program and Features area of the Control Paneland see if Windows Media Player 11 is on the list, try uninstalling it (If you can) then re-installing it

2.) And read through this Forum as people are having same issues and you can try out some of the thing they are

Note: This fix is for Windows Vista. I am running 32-bit Vista. Let me know if this works for the 64-bit and/or XP.

Hey guys/gals I found a solution!!!!

This was my problem: I click on WMP icon and nothing appears no matter how many times I clicked it. Task manager does not show any signs of WMP running. I tried to re-install it, but WMP wouldn't let me because the install was an older version of WMP. So after a few days of searching the net, I finally came across a fix that actually worked out for me.

FIX

1. Click on Start (Orb), then All Programs, then Accessories.

2. Right-click on Command Prompt. Run as Administrator. Click continue or enter password.

3. Type the following:

regsvr32 jscript.dll

Press enter, then click ok. Then type the following:

regsvr32 vbscript.dll

Press enter, then click ok.

4. Type exit, then press enter.

5. Start WMP.

6. Done!

Here is the link where i found the fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925704/en-us

Hope this fixed WMP for you guys.

Thanks... I'm using XP though, and that forum specifically says vista?
Ah I've just given up on it for now I guess. Given up on everything.

Re: Windows Media Player won't work :( HELP!

To make certain Windows Media Player isn't hidden off the screen. Raise your screen resolution.

-Right click on your desktop
-In Display Properties, select Settings tab
-Look down at screen area and crank the settings up.
-Click OK
Your monitor will go black and come back on with smaller icons if successful. If you see Windows media player, drag it to the center of the screen before windows reverts back to your original settings. If it stays black, don't touch anything until the screen comes back again and try another resolution.

Just re-install it. Go to start, settings, control panel, add/remove programs.

Re: Windows Media Player won't work :( HELP!

Okay, try this: at your command prompt or Start/Run, type this:
"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe"
This is Windows Media Player 6.4 and should be able to play anything your version of WMP could play as long as you keep the higher version of WMP on your system.
You can also try:
"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\mplayer2.exe"
but it seems to only work if you don't have any other version of WMP on your system. Microsoft keeps it patched up for security so you don't have to worry about it.

Okay, as a last resort, you can try reinstalling Windows...

Too drastic? Then, I'll give you a list of links to different but good audio programs that I have used:

You can try to fix Windows media player by deleting the data base it is using. Restart your player, press F3, and enter where you have moved your music to. If you have downloaded a more recent version of Media Player, then you may need to uninstall it and re-install the previous version you have. Also, make sure that you have the correct codec for your Media Player. Then, you may also need to check if there are no underlying problems with your operating system or registry.

Lurk before you leap...
