re: Overcoming Social Anxiety and Shyness by Gillian Butler

I love the book as well. It's the first whole book I have read on SAD which has actually made me feel positive, and not depressed. The tone is supportive and gentle, yet there is a chance to really improve if you work through the exercises etc. I've read the book through without doing the exercises, and now I have started again working through the exercises one by one. The exercises also allow a lot of room for modifications and creativity, which is excellent.

As my first exercise, I wrote down how SA affects me and what I want to change, this gave me inspiration to make a rough plan about which areas to tackle first. All in all, and excellent book, I'd recommend it to all of you.

re: Overcoming Social Anxiety and Shyness by Gillian Butler

I have three books that deal with SA and actually this is one that i am reading for the second time, i really love it, explained a lot of things to me as a previous poster said that i would think that i was the only one going through.

I am really bad at doing the exercises, ended up skipping them, but that is something i will be trying to do in my second read. I am really determined to face this problem, tired of running from it

By the way, my first post, glad to have found this place

I tried reading the book but didnt do much. Now it wasnt the only book I have read on social anxiety but I have had more success with Dr. Richards tapes *cbt) and medication

I personally think the books approach to CBT is great and while medication can be a quick solution it should never be though of as something you Want to do, rather something you do AS WELL as CBT, exposure and analyzing your emotions. The best thing about people with SA is if you can learn to change this, you can learn to change anything and then there is no stopping you.

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You MUST do the thing you think you cannot do.

Re: Overcoming Social Anxiety and Shyness by Gillian Butler

I'm reading this book the second time. It seems no one has done the exercises on first read

This book helps a lot in understanding what the actual problem in SA is. After all, before attacking a problem you have to have it well-defined. Now that I have started doing the exercises it has come clear how useful it is to see my own thoughts actually written down. I get this "look how silly your way of thinking is!" feeling, but in a good way!

Well, this book has definitely helped MrDee and it has helped me a lot already. Even though I have only just began doing the exercises.

It would be nice to hear from the previous posters or anyone else who has read this book!

Anyone know what the difference is between the 1999 and 2001 versions of this book?

I recently got this book and am slowly reading through it, 2-4 pages a day. Well I'm reading a bunch of other books on different subjects as well, that's why I'm so slow. But so far I'm really liking this book, I think it may be the best book I've gotten on SAD and Shyness so far.

According to Barnes & Noble an updated version of the book is coming out next week. I think I'll check it out.

probably so, but worth to read in my opinion. I looked on Amazon and saw it was a more detailed looking book.
