Anxiety & Phobia Workbook

Book Review: Anxiety & Phobia Workbook by Edmund J. Bourne

The author attended University of Chicago, PH.D in psychology with lots of real world experience to boot. Although I don't like the section on "natural supplements", everything else was quite helpful to me.

What to expect:

Relaxation Techniques: Breathing, Muscle Relaxation, Meditation

Systematic Desensitization Techniques

Visualization Techniques

Desscriptions of various anxiety and phobia conditions

Exercise Programs

Building Self-Esteem

Healing the inner child

Diet advice

Specific and Holistic advice on reducing stress in general

I think this book is useful to just about anyone, and it is inexpensive.

Well if it covers all this, it's a very good book then. I'm glad that you found it useful.. Thanks for sharing..

It's not personal. It's strictly business.

I'm using this book right now and I'm finding it extremely useful. I hate going to therapists; just a personal preference. This is something I can pick up anytime I want and it gives so many great ideas for relaxing and taking of yourself, etc. I definitely love this book!

I personally think this is a great book. It deals with most of the issues relating to anxiety. I find that the self talk chapter to be very good as it deals with changing negative thought patterns. I find myself always renewing this book from the library. I know I should just buy one as its a good book to reference to.

Re: Anxiety & Phobia Workbook

I like this book as it it so holistic and explains how anxiety is on many levels/can be tacked on many levels depending on the individual. If you just tackle one then it's no surprise that anxiety comes back. It encompasses a lot of stuff I learnt separately in one place which is useful.

I must admit I started worrying what nutritional disorders I could have e.g. hyperglycaemia (sugar levels). I'm a firm believer that caffeine and alcohol does have as noticeable effect on my mood but again slightly dubious about dietary supplements.

Re: Anxiety & Phobia Workbook

I found the chapter on mistaken beliefs particularly helpful for my generalized anxiety disorder. The relaxation techniques are also helpful. I like the wholistic approach this book has. It is not the best book for social anxiety specifically, though.

Re: Anxiety & Phobia Workbook

This book has helped me more than any other in overcoming social anxiety. The key word in the title is 'workbook'. You are not going to get anything out of it by just reading it. You have to do the exercises. Thats the tough part. Its A LOT of work. Ive probably been through the book 50 times at least. But its worth it if you put the effort in and make overcoming the disorder a priority in your life.

Re: Anxiety & Phobia Workbook

I saw Beyond Anxiety and Phobia by the same author in the bookstore the other day. I need to get my hands on this one though.

They could not endure another explosion of the passion that boiled in him; but to their surprise all he said was 'Ah' as if he thought to himself, But why make a fuss about that? Naturally men are drowned in a storm, but it is a perfectly straightforward affair, and the depths of the sea are only water after all.
