If it works for you, who cares what its current ~standing~ is. But, to answer your question, UK angle:
I lived in a metropolis, and everyone smoked. Nobody cared. You'd light up in a phone box and a policeman would knock politely to tell you to put it out. Even cops didn't care. You could smoke while walking down a street. People would turn up stoned to work.
Now I'm in a relatively small city, and people are a bit funny about weed. They're all cool with it when you actually broach the subject, but I don't see much smoking in public. It's more of a hush-hush backyard activity.
I tend to like a person better if they smoke, purely because I assume that they are likely to be more relaxed, open-minded and liberal about other things too. They feel safe to be around.
