Social Phobia Treatment Group (St Lucia, Australia)

Description:
The Social Phobia Treatment Group is a high quality,
low-cost group program for people that have problems in social
situations. Group treatment is a way for people with similar problems to
work together. Group members can benefit from getting support from
others who share their experience, and may provide this support and
understanding to others. Group treatment is one of the best ways for
managing Social Phobia, as it provides an excellent way for members to
practice new skills in a small, supportive group environment.

The Social Phobia Treatment Group is an 8 week therapy program.  The
treatment sessions last two hours. The group is a Cognitive-Behaviour
Therapy (CBT) program focusing on the relationship between the unhelpful
thoughts, physical symptoms and avoidance.  Members of the group learn
about the causes and symptoms of anxiety. They also learn skills to
manage anxiety so they may gradually feel more comfortable in social
situations. While the treatment is in a group, we focus on each person's
individual concerns to provide practical strategies to face the social
situations they fear. The group is run by a clinical psychologist and
two intern psychologists.

Before the group begins, members take part in an individual assessment
session to make sure the group is right for them. They also attend a one
hour individual pre-group appointment, where they can meet one of the
psychologists who will be running the group and learn more about the
program. To get the most out of the program members should come along to
all sessions.

Individual follow up sessions are also available approximately one month
after program completion.
