My patients have always taught me critical lessons about the challenges of living with mental illness. Even more important, they taught me one very valuable lesson that I continue to hold in the highest esteem today: My role as a psychiatrist is to not only alleviate the symptoms of mental illness, but to also help individuals redefine themselves. Through proper treatment, I am able to help my patients make lasting changes in their sense of self, their relationships, and their lives.
