Medication
Before exploring treatment options for social anxiety disorder, it is a good idea to first look at the main social anxiety disorder (social phobia) page for a general overview of the condition. Additionally, you should always consult a qualified health care professional before beginning, changing or stopping a treatment.
Common Medications Used for Social Anxiety
Many people suffering from Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) benefit from using medication. Since the disorder was first recognized, a few different types of medications have been found to effective for treatment.
The following list outlines the main categories of medication commonly prescribed for Social Anxiety Disorder. There are also other medications not listed here that may possibly be prescribed.
1) SSRIs/SNRIs
SSRIs and SNRIs are the types of medications most commonly prescribed for SAD. They are generally used as anti-depressants but several of these, Paxil, Zoloft and Effexor in particular, have been approved by the FDA specifically for social anxiety. Both SSRIs and SNRIs work by regulating serotonin levels in the body and research shows that they are effective at treating a wide range of anxiety disorders. Most people report minor side effects such as changes in sexual function and appetite when using these medications.
2) Benzodiazepines
The medications known as benzodiazepines are often used as a short-term solution to periods of increased anxiety or panic. Common examples of these drugs are Klonopin and Xanax. SAD patients can benefit from benzodiazepines, but they often need to be given alongside other medications that can be taken for longer periods to manage more generalized social anxiety. Taking these medications for long periods of time generally decreases their effectiveness and can lead to dependency, although some patients find they are able to benefit from them long term.
3) Beta-Blockers
Beta-blockers, such as Inderal, work to prevent the physical symptoms of anxiety, such as a rapid and irregular heartbeat. Since these symptoms are mainly associated with public speaking or giving a performance, these medications are normally prescribed for occasional use. SAD patients report that they are effective in situations such as when it is necessary to give a speech or presentation for school or work, rather than for daily use for social anxiety.
4) MAOIs
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are common antidepressant drugs used to treat Social Anxiety Disorder. Examples of these types of medications used for SAD are Nardil and Parnate. Although these drugs are less popular in current psychiatric circles, many researchers believe that they uniquely address the specific deficiencies most commonly associated with social anxiety and social phobia and, therefore, have the potential to be the most effective medical treatment for these specific disorders.
Use Resources to Make a Better Decision
In order to pursue a course of treatment using one or more of these medications, you will first need to consult with a licensed psychiatrist who will review your symptoms and discuss which medications may be suitable for you. Not everyone benefits from prescription medications in the same way, so it is important to review your choices with your doctor and monitor any potential side effects that you might encounter.
The individual experiences about treatment for social anxiety disorder (social phobia) are not a substitute for medical advice.
You should always consult a qualified health care professional before beginning, changing or stopping a treatment.
