Default Over 5 minutes on the phone with my State Representative

She called regarding an e-mail I'd sent a couple days ago. We ended up having a very nice conversation regarding the issue I'd written her about and also another issue that came up.

That's kind of cool, ive never talked to a state representative before, or the Canadian version of that, I'm not even sure what it is. Talking to authority figures like that can be tough, judging from my experience talking to police.

What issues did you talk about?

Stupid, ineffective and redundant changes to state law regarding firearms; changes proposed by Milwaukee's police chief, mayor, and DA. One would make straw purchases a state felony, even though that's already been a federal felony (for the last 41 years) for both the straw buyer and ultimate possessor of the firearm under the Gun Control Act of 1968. In addition to facing a federal charge of lying on ATF form 4473 when you buy a gun where the first question asks if you're a straw buyer. I can think of at least a couple more crimes that they could be charged with, but apparently some people think more laws for law-breakers to ignore will help us.

Another proposal would turn the victims of gun theft into criminals if they failed to report it in a "timely" manner, where "timely" remains thus far undefined.

We then spoke about State Senator Sullivan and she told me that she will be running for his position. We talked about other stuff in the media currently, specifically proposals to increase the beer tax. She informed me that there is also a proposal to raise taxes on hard liquor as well (never mentioned on the news).

Politicians who disagree with you tend to avoid you as much as possible. She calls because she is very much pro-gun and very much against raising taxes -- two of my major issues.

We don't agree on everything. For example, she's opposed to medical marijuana saying "it's illegal under federal law and I must uphold the Constitution." Uh, where in the US Constitution does it mention pot, mind-altering substance, or drugs at all (other than alcohol which is mentioned in two amendments -- one to ban it in 1920 & another to unban it in 1933)?
