I'm a member of this meetup group. This is probably the biggest SA group in California. I've been to two of their SAB workshops and they are pretty good. It's a far drive for me so I don't go very often.

I would love to meetup with this group. It's just too far to drive to.

This group looks like the real deal, I just registered with them on meetup, and I am hoping to go to one soon. The only problem is that it's about an hour drive for me to get to any of their meetups, and my car hasn't been cooperating with me lately. Can anyone PM me about their experiences with this group?

I'm very interested but... am I gonna have to introduce myself in front of everybody at the first meeting? Will they be offended if I hide in the corner and watch at first? I know it's kind of pathetic, but the thought of actually showing up to one of these meetings scares the crap out of me.

Most of the people there will be just as nervous as you. If you do hide in the corner at least there won't be any reason to feel weird about it because everyone will understand. I am planning on going to some meetups in July. Maybe I'll see you?

They have many meetups, like 2 or 3 every week, and they do a whole bunch of different things like hiking, going to movies, going to the beach, minigolf, playing basketball etc. They also have a SAB workshop that is the first sunday of every month. And they recently had a meetup where we did social exercises at a mall - doing embarrasing things in front of people, saying hi to strangers, etc - I didn't really do anything though, I mostly watched other people do them.

For the average age, it seems like most of them are in their 20's, but there also older people that go, and younger people. At the last workshop the organizer's dad actually mentioned the subject of different age groups and how older people and younger teens are hesitant to come. So he is thinking of ways to alleviate this problem.

They usually have a new members meetup that is for people who have just joined. The one I went to it was at a coffee shop with Jenny (the organizer), and two other members (they weren't actually new members though), and we just sat down and she explained how the group worked.

But if you go to the SAB workshop, they usually sit in a circle and have everyone introduce themselves, but you aren't obligated to. But you don't have to sit in the circle, you can just grab a chair and sit in the corner and watch.

I've been to one of these meetups. Everything is pretty awkward (of course). But everyone is friendly and will make you feel welcome. The people there were anywhere from 19 to 30 something years old. I don't think I'm gonna go back though, it's just not really my kinda thing.
