Yoga

Yoga in Sanskrit refers to the traditional physical and mental disciplines that started in India, however what is commonly referred to as "yoga" is the practice of physical postures or poses.

Yoga has had positive affects on my mind and my body. I definitely recommend it!! There are different types. I personally practice Bikram / Hot yoga. I love this type but I don't think it's for everyone.

Yoga has helped me immensely with my anxiety. In short, it's helped me connect more with my body, those around me, and the world. It's made me realize that there is something bigger in this world than me, which isn't tangible. That alone, makes it easier to continue to go on with my life and live.

Also, through some of the deeper stretching poses, I've been able to release a lot of deep-seeded memories and emotions. I've been able to unlock secrets I burred years ago, and I've taken them to therapy to work on.

Exercise in general is good as well, but I think that yoga is so much more than just traditional exercise. I would start with something gentle, like Gentle Flow, and then work your way up to the more difficult types.

i love yoga! i do it at home, and in classes. it really lowers my blood pressure and takes away stress and anxiety.

I agree! Yoga has helped me a lot, too. I like yoga and also sweating in the sauna. It's very calming.

I do yoga on my Wii and it's pretty good but hard to get your mind focus when you have to look at the TV the whole time and balance on the balance board.

Hi toughcookie,
I have come to know through this post that yoga is ideal for anxiety and I am interested to know about yoga types.
Is hot yoga good for anxiety patients?

I love yoga! I do it once a week, and it's a really great way to take a step back from everything, great stress-reliever.

Hot yoga is kind of tough for the beginner. Everything seems harder when it's 105 degrees in the room... however, the benefits (if you can tough it out), are so awesome - soft skin, a huge sense of accomplishment, and better sleep! Not only that, but I usually feel extremely relaxed after every session of regular yoga or hot yoga. It makes socializing a lot easier. YOGA FTW!

I was doing yoga five years back. I was regular in the beginning and then slowly one hour turned to half hour then 20 min . Now for last two years I am not at all doing yoga.I should start it now again as I find myself very stressful. Hope the gap of two years will not affect me.

I tried yoga a few years ago..Hatha I think it was...pretty slow and gentle which was fine by me.
Only thing was the class was full of women about 20, and they could all stretch 5 times further than me!
I lasted about 9 or 10 classes...also I have a bad back (spondylolisthesis) and some exercises are dangerous I think.
Would like to try again..but not convinced yoga is for everyone.

Yoga has helped me more than anything else with anxiety. I even used it to help stay grounded when detoxing off of Effexor. I encourage people to do hot yoga because you can sweat away all of your worries, and it feels really invigorating and cleansing once you are done. Yoga merges the soul with the rest of the body through breathing mindfully. It is not judgmental and encourages us to accept what is and not worry about what we can't change. Yoga is my favourite medicine of all time

I'm surpised to hear so many great things about yoga, and how much it helps. Now I'm gonna think more seriously about it. I even have a friend who loves it and took classes. maybe ill ask him for tips

Yeah, i used too do yoga off those p90x tapes as well it was alright, but that one like 90 minutes long, think i might try it again and see if it helps =)

I do Body Balance which is a fusion of Tai Chi, Yoga and Pilates nearly everyday since I live next to the gym that offers that class along with Hatha Yoga and Tai Chi once a week.

I've been going for these classes for about a month now and I honestly feel that they are what I look forward to every day. It really helps to calm my mind and de-stress.
