I will try to share some examples that relate in some way. There were people
serving and speaking for God that felt inadequate about preaching, and teaching people God's commandments. Jonah was supposed to preach to the Ninevites, but instead he gave into fear. Instead of going over to Nineveh he headed out toward Tarshish-about 2,200 miles from Nineveh. Read the book of Jonah in the Bible. It's a few short books before Matthew. Reading the whole text will broaden the picture. He was afraid that the people would reject what he said and did not think they would repent. Later as you probably know he was swallowed by the huge fish or whale and lived inside three days. He realized he was wrong, took courage and went back, and preached and the people repented. You know at some point he had fear of man, fear of speaking and of rejection. But he overcame his fear. Moses felt inadequate and said he was just not a fluent speaker. See Exodus 4:10. He said he was "slow of mouth" and "slow of tongue". He could have had a speech problem or it could have been anxiety that made him slow, unsteady, or whatever the case. There is not really a direct scripture on social anxiety but I'm sure there were plenty of people like this that became inadequate. You'll find that these were just ordinary people who did get afraid at times. I'm not sure if that was what you were looking for. It helps me to know that at some point just about everyone gets anxiety about speaking whether all the time or for a short time.

Good examples. I've also heard that Elijah was probably a timid and anxious man, but God still used him greatly to call the Isrealites to repentance.
Here's a few verses I like. I've often said these as prayers... Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. ~ 1 Peter 5:7 I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. ~ Psalm 34:4 When I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me? ~ Psalm 56:3-4 In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul. ~ 94:19 Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. ~ Matthew 11:28-29

2 Timothy 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind. Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Proverbs 29:25 The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe. |
