Default Should Scotland secede from the U.K. and be and it's own country?

A referendum on Scotland seceding from the U.K. to be it's own country or staying with the U.K. will be held in 2014.

Considering the language they speak isn't English, it would be best that Scotland secede.

I think the UK should secede from Scotland beforehand to spite them.

I vote yes, simply because anything that would instantly make every global map in the world obsolete would be really funny

That, and more ignorant Americans making haggis jokes.

Who really cares? What does Scotland do exactly? Does it have any industry or is it just call centres full of people you can't understand?

Without England to support it, Scotland would end up drowning in a pile of it's own deep-fried heroin and haggis.

Okay, so Scotland is a state within U.K.? Is Great Britain another state?

Yes. The majority of Scottish people want independence, therefore, if the UK is a democracy (which we all know it isn't), then it should be granted.

As for the referendum, the UK government promises referendums all the time - they never materialise. Remember the promises Blair made about a referendum on the EU?

Even if Scotland does become an autonomous state, the English government will still basically control it, like it basically still controls India and the rest of the commonwealth.

Is it okay that I agree for Scotland to secceed? I don't understand why the Royal Family still feels like it needs to own Scotland and Wales. I do know why Scotland and Wales want independance, but not why the Royal Family still wants to own them. Can somebody from the Scotland or Wales please explain this part of it to an American in a simple way?

GB is made up of three countries: England, Wales and Scotland. The UK is England, Wales, Scotland + Northern Ireland

You can choose either way, really, we've all got an opinion on this. Personally, I'm Scottish, but if we become independent, I'm moving to Britain. I'm not sure if the Royal Family still want to "own" Scotland, but it seems that a lot of Scots want to keep Liz II as the head of state (because we want our pride as an autonomous nation, with a foreign, unelected head of state - makes sense), so that's why it may be that way. Given how little the Royals have to do with politics, Scotland could be completely politically independent, and still keep the monarchy. For example, the Australian Prime Minister is Julia Gillard, but the head of state is still Elizabeth II. Same deal with Canada. It's more a symbolic gesture than something that will actually make a difference.

Although you're obviously being sarcastic, and trying to be funny, that statement just makes you sound like a dick.

Okay - the island on the left is Ireland. The white part is the Republic of Ireland, the blue part is Northern Ireland, which belongs to the United Kingdom (also the full blue island on the right). The United Kingdom is Great Britain island plus Northern Ireland.

On the Island of Great Britain there is England on the lower right (including London), Wales is on the west side of the island, looking like it is about to kick Ireland, and then the top part of the island is Scotland.

Now I get it.

You do realize that if you break away from Great Britain, you don't get their coverage - it's like an out of control teen who breaks off from his parents.
