No way. Things could only happen for a reason if the world was set up to work that way by some higher power that I don't believe in.

...I figure that this is similar to questions like- Does a God exist? ..and Does life have any meaning?
And, I like the Buddhist approach and similar approaches. ...I figure that we're actually supposed to make up the answers as we go. And that, saying 'no' is often part of later figuring out 'yes' ...only, to again wonder about it and keep changing etc. So I put: undecided.

I don't know. I suppose it might be comforting to convince yourself that there is a purpose for everything that happens, but I don't really believe it.

I dont believe in any of that fate/destiny stuff. I believe everything is about opportunity and decision.

Everything DOES happen for a reason but not necessarily for a purpose. The weather didnt happen randomly, it was caused by factors not known to us. A murderer didnt randomly kill someone, it happened because of a chemical reaction in his/her brain. A tree didnt fall randomly, it fell due to old age.

I think everything is just a reaction to our actions like cause and effect, so looking at it like that, everything does happen for a reason. If you want to put the spiritual aspect to it, then no, I don't believe everything happens on purpose so we can learn from it.

Yes it makes perfect sense to me that god (I'm assuming that is what is being posited) would wish me to learn from the misery of losing my dad. Or that he wishes the Chinese to learn from the loss of almost 40,000 lives, in order to apply more stringent building regulations so as to avoid a repeat of such a tragedy. Or perhaps the 700 people feared dead after the ferry they were on capsized in a Typhoon (I'm nothing if not topical) is a way of teaching us that water is better left to the fish. Yes, I see your point.
Learning from such events, if indeed we do, is a consequence of those events happening, but not a REASON as to why they happen. |

not really.... I returned and saw under the sun that—
The race is not to the swift, Nor the battle to the strong, Nor bread to the wise, Nor riches to men of understanding, Nor favour to men of skill; But time and chance happen to them all. –Eccl 9:11 |

Maybe not everything happens for a reason, nor a purpose.
Maybe it just happens.

If EVERYTHING were complete randomness, the world couldn't function at all. I believe everything does happen for a reason and you chose to put it there to challenge yourself and grow more spiritual. To become more aware, learn from our actions, treat other how we want to be treated.....etc...
yeah I don't find many ppl that think like me and i've come to accept that. I forgot to post what I thought. So I wonder if the invitable fight will come out about this. How can you prove this..............blah blah blah.....its not about proving, its about inner knowlege, the kind your feel deep in your heart and your gut. Anyone can grasp for it. We have so much help out there we can call upon it.

I firmly believe everything happens for a reason. Even "no reason" counts as a reason (i.e. random events).
